"Crank Up the Jean Machine" is an original screenplay adapted for a Chamber style Reader's Theater. Screenwriter Jana Rothenberg prepared this short play for Speech 231 - Performance Literature - class at Kauai Community College. Instructor Sharon Milan's Spring 2014 students performed the story that takes place in Honolulu HI at the Jean Machine Denim Wear manufacturing factory. The film crew was made up of students from Art 257, Digital Storytelling, lead by instructor Gary Ellwood. It was filmed in the art lab on campus at KCC. The hybrid style performance uses traditional Reader's Theater and Chamber Theater where actors read from scripts, interact with their audience and with each other. There are minimal props and costuming as each actor mimes props and stage settings. from janaj productions Added 349 1 0

Filmmaker Jana Rothenberg and Geologist Chuck Blay team up again to create this geo-Kauai short teaser work. Blay begins the "Story of Sand" at the Edge of Kauai when he follows the lava sands of Waimea Beach up into the Waimea Canyon. He makes "thin sections" of the grains of sand to study the composition and to determine what a particular beach is made of - marine or land originations. He discusses weathering, deposition and just a little about how rocks get to be sand. Finally, he poses the question, if Kauai is a volcanic island, why aren't there more volcanic sandy beaches? Join us for the next episode to find out why! This short video was made as a class project for Digital Storytelling at Kauai Community College. It is a short version, or "teaser", as a part of a larger body of work in the 3-part projected full-length series called "The Edge of Kauai". Part II will cover the ancient sand dunes of the south shore of Kauai along the Mahaulepu Coast. Part III will take the viewers around the island to have a deeper look at the unique beach sediments on the Edge of Kauai.

I live on Kauai. I love to study lava. I made this video about lava, about Kauai's geology and about the beauty I find on Hawaii as a class assignment in my first semester of Digital Storytelling at Kauai Community College, Kauai HI. I give special mahalo to geologist Chuck Blay for participating as my life partner, inspiration, and reference in this student project. I thank Digital Kumu/teacher Camera Koohan Paik for her inspiration and support in exploring Final Cut Pro. Mahalo to chart and diagram makers who are nameless and instructive. I thank the musicians whose music I used for background and thank Volcano Video Productions for giving me permission to use some awesome hot lava footage. Mahalo.

Getting the inspiration to fly right "out of the blue" turned into a Discovery Flight where I discovered I was passionate about flying. This student project "narrative" video was done at Kauai Community College in the Digital Storytelling class. This was my first video done in that class. Gratitude: Thank you to Peter Paul and Mary for use of their background and inspirational song "If I Had Wings". Thank you to all the unnamed photographers and photos I used to make this student work. Thank you "Camera" Koohan Paik, my digital teacher - for inspiration, education, patience as I pushed my way through loosing and finding my clips in Final Cut Pro. Thank you Professor Paul Hemmerla for introducing me to video in the first place and thank you Kauai Community College for getting these awesome iMac computers!! While the pixel quality may not be there, the spirit of flight and creativity is. Enjoy my discovery flight that heralded many years of passionate flying and discovering more about myself through the experience.
