Created for the exhibition "Discovery! Excavating the Ancient World" at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, Listening to Karanis documents the sounds of present-day Karanis, a city in the Fayoum oasis on the outskirts of modern day Cairo. Ancient Karanis survived as a city well into the Graeco-Roman era of Egyptian history, and is the source for much of the Kelsey Museum's ancient artifacts. I visited Karanis in 2010 and made a series of field recordings throughout the ancient city, including its ruined temples. While making recordings, I was followed by an Egyptian army helicopter, which makes an appearance here. My guide for the trip to Karanis provides the voiceover narration at the end of the video discussing the origins of the name of Lake Moeris, a lake in the Fayoum which was considered the birthplace of the universe in some ancient Egyptian mythology.
