OSCILLA - Scalable interactive audiovisual environment. (A.Santini/UBIKteatro 2011-2013) Performance studies @ Tokyo Experimental Festival Vol.8 - 2013. (Excerpts) OSCILLA is an interactive audiovisual installation that explores harmonic structures and their visualisation. A projected scalable interface allows for context-specific adaptability and for a variety of intuitive physical interaction paradigms whereby the positions and movements of objects or people, optically tracked within a given area, determine the volume and pitch of various sine-wave oscillators. Each position and frequency value is projected on the main surface, along with music notation, while a visual representation of the resulting combination of sounds (Lissajous curves) is plotted in real-time on a second screen. Sounds are additionally diffused by means of multiple speakers to form variable and spatially distributed sound geometries within the installation space. Participants can thus create morphing chords and harmonies, explore unusual microtonal intervals and beat frequencies while discovering the fascinating connection between harmonic structures and their visual counterparts. Inspired by the ‘Oscilla’, votive objects used in the Latin tradition, the installation is not just a musical or scientific instrument, but also a sort of modern ritual, (hence the candles) a ‘window’ from which to peek into powerful underlying ‘harmonic’ laws that seem to govern our world, a space to escape the obsessive and pragmatic acceleration of our linear time, to reconnect with a more spiritual, inward dimension and allow ourselves to wonder. AUTHORS: Ross Maciejewski, Stephen Rudolph, Ryan Hafen, Ahmad Abusalah, Mohamed Yakout, Mourad Ouzzani, William S. Cleveland, Shaun J. Grannis, Michael Wade, David S. Ebert ABSTRACT: When analyzing syndromic surveillance data, health care officials look for areas with unusually high cases of syndromes. Unfortunately, many outbreaks are difficult to detect because their signal is obscured by the statistical noise. Consequently, many detection algorithms have a high false positive rate. While many false alerts can be easily filtered by trained epidemiologists, others require health officials to drill down into the data, analyzing specific segments of the population and historical trends over time and space. Furthermore, the ability to accurately recognize meaningful patterns in the data becomes more challenging as these data sources increase in volume and complexity. To facilitate more accurate and efficient event detection, we have created a visual analytics tool that provides analysts with linked geo-spatiotemporal and statistical analytic views. We model syndromic hotspots by applying a kernel density estimation on the population sample. When an analyst selects a syndromic hotspot, temporal statistical graphs of the hotspot are created. Similarly, regions in the statistical plots may be selected to generate geospatial features specific to the current time period. Demographic filtering can then be combined to determine if certain populations are more affected than others. These tools allow analysts to perform real-time hypothesis testing and evaluation.

AUTHORS: Carlos E. Scheidegger, John M. Schreiner, Brian Duffy, Hamish Carr, Cláudio T. Silva ABSTRACT: Recent results have shown a link between geometric properties of isosurfaces and statistical properties of the underlying sampled data. However, this has two defects: not all of the properties described converge to the same solution, and the statistics computed are not always invariant under isosurface-preserving transformations. We apply Federer's Coarea Formula from geometric measure theory to explain these discrepancies. We describe an improved substitute for histograms based on weighting with the inverse gradient magnitude, develop a statistical model that is invariant under isosurface-preserving transformations, and argue that this provides a consistent method for algorithm evaluation across multiple datasets based on histogram equalization. We use our corrected formulation to reevaluate recent results on average isosurface complexity, and show evidence that noise is one cause of the discrepancy between the expected figure and the observed one.
