      • Trying to Understand It All: The Kirkwood City Council Shooting

        from Chris Jeske Added 1,347 1 3

Drawing national media attention on February 7, 2008, the Kirkwood City Council shooting has caused much despair and division. Three years after the shooting, confusion is still prevalent. However, several groups and individuals are still working toward understanding. Through the opinions, stories, and testimonies of those interviewed, the film provides a portrait of the conditions that contributed to the shooting at Kirkwood City Hall and have long contributed to racial tensions in Kirkwood. The film culminates with the story of Cookie Thornton’s funeral, a story powerful enough to provide hope to all people working for racial justice and community transformation. 2:45 Part I: The City Council Shooting 11:54 Part II: The Redevelopment of Meacham Park 26:20 Part III: Charles "Cookie" Thornton 38:06 Part IV: Restorative Justice 51:04 Part V: Strategies for Transformation 56:54 End Credits

Igneous skis and I decided to make a film to promote skis that can handle the abuse of big mountain contests. It was also the year that fat skis and twin tips started to appear on the scene. It was mainly known as the video with the 224.5 ft record cliff jump by Paul Ahern that was perfomed years earlier in October at the Remarkables, NZ. (its at the end of the vid) Locations include Kirkwood, Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, Snowbird, Brighton, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Squaw, Heavenly, The Patch, Abasin, Steamboat, Blackcomb Glacier, Valdez Alaska, SF and New Zealand. The sport was changing....

This ski film was made during the epic snow year of 1994-95 around Lake Tahoe with exquisite 8mm tape technology. Two 17-18 year olds travel around the lake in the likes of the characters of the movie Ski School to find cliff drops, bombholes, continued release of Marker bindings, July skiing at Squaw, August skiing off of Carson Pass, and a little bit of dirt skiing for good measure. The film also shows the first meeting of Mike Tierney before he became the Jackson Hole first descent legend...oh how fun it was to be young. Zach Goodin even helps shred the gnar at Alpine. On a final note, all the professional editing was done with the '2 VCR dub' technique. Enjoy the radness....

Video Upload Courtesy Kirkwood SMART Energy Blog by Raejean Fellows Important Note: Due to a capturing technical problem, approximately 2 minutes are missing between the first and second hour. Here's the transcribed version of the missing segment: In answer to the question: What additional services do you see KMPUD taking on? Bruce Giannola: "(KCA) We don’t do snow removal. We don’t do waste water. But, we do try to build a community and a lot of the things that are being talked about are very similar and I think there is a great deal of crossover. One of the things that needs to happen in the valley is to be able to get people to work together. Every entity in the valley sort of does its own thing, likes to push itself forward and do it and develop it within their own boundaries. I think that we need to reach across the aisles and bring people together so they all work together. It will be much more effective, much more cost effective. I think that in answer to this question about the additional services. I think everyone is going to be faced with the issue of trying to do it in an affordable fashion. You can’t all do it alone, it costs too much. So, We have to work together. We do need to put together a strategic plan, whether it be for the KCA, KMR or for KMPUD so we can sort of see what the vision is going forward in to the future." Peter Dornbrook: "Our charter is pretty filled up with what we can do. I see some future participation in the roads, if the community so desires. The Board’s policy along has been to wait for the community to ask us to take on a new task and when we do take on a new task, make sure that it doesn’t jeopardize tasks that we have already been performing in terms of expenditures. I would have to say that I don’t see us taking on a lot of new roles, but I see us expanding the roles we already have."

Back for more, its now the 1995-1996 season and the kids are now attending collegiate studies in Colorado with a newly acquired Hi8mm video camera. The season ended a bit short for a few of the athletes, but at least they are making huge salaries being unprofessional skiers. Therefore, expect some skiing, puking, a couple trips to Utah, Jackson Hole, Steamboat, a crash in Heart Chute, and a big blue lake called Tahoe. Enjoy skiing by Mike Tierney, Zach Goodin, and others. Of course, we tried our hardest to emulate the popular Whiskey movies at the time....I mean, we just had to.
