The word “Utopia” coined by Thomas More is derived from the Greek words ou “not”, and topos “place”. Utopia therefore translates as “no-place”, however when pronounced, it rhymes with eu-topos, which means “good-place”. This pun creates an ambiguity which is simultaneously tantalising and elusive- the ideal place which doesn’t exist. As such the concept of Utopia is simultaneously tantalising and elusive. A mental construct which we project back onto the real landscapes that inspire it, the utopia allows us to give meaning to the world, by believing it differently. The Radiant City takes the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille as a starting point to explore this search for utopia. Designed and constructed by Le Corbusier as the “Radiant City”, the building was conceived as a prototype for the city of the future in 1952. My photographs were made at the Unité over 60 years later, in the summer of 2014 and investigate the role of both architecture and photography in the construction of myth. The Unité still facilitates an interpretation of utopia on a number of levels- a nostalgic utopia representing the idealism of the past, an iconic pilgrimage site for designers, and the domestic utopia of home & family for its inhabitants. This persistence of the utopian impulse suggests that architecture is just the start: of inhabitation, of place making, of imagining. Regardless of technological advances the search for Utopia is part of our daily process of seeing and constructing significance.

Short film by Jonayd Cherifi and Marin Troude on crafting and riding the B(l)each board, a special project made in Marseille by Semis + Akasha + WJ. « Going back to something for the sake of loving it » After collaborating with Julien* and Fabrice** on the Majunga board, a shape celebrating the birth of skateboarding, the desire arose to make a board inspired by the Santa Cruz era. This time, we reached out to our good friend and recognized artist, William*** who also lives in Marseille, for the graphic design. The final « waves seen as arrows » were drawn from an idea of speed, direction and the Meditterranean gradient of blues. Finished on the rooftop of Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse, this collaboration is about being local, working with other artisan friends and making something for the sake of loving it. Artisanship is resiliency, « falling and picking yourself up again becomes normal » to produce what you want, exactly how you want. The B(l)each board is a 10 piece special project, exclusively sold at Semis' 318 Cité Radieuse, Marseille and Space Ninety 8, Brooklyn NY. * Owner and master craftsman Akasha Board Co. in Marseille ** Fabrice Toucourt is a local tattoo artist with global radiance *** William Jean is an ongoing contributor in Semis' projects

Inspired in part by the vernacular Ottoman architecture he observed during his travels in Turkey in 1911, Le Corbusier’s Maison Dom-Ino, first presented a century ago, could be read as a manifesto for openness in architecture—a hypothetical proposal for a new symbiosis between the hand of the architect and the individuality of the occupant. Through a series of 99 short films, 99 Dom-Ino takes the centennial of Le Corbusier’s design as the trigger for a survey of Italian domesticity and its relationship with the landscape, throughout the full length of the peninsula, over the last 100 years. A project by Space Caviar Concept: Joseph Grima Research and production: Martina Muzi Photography: Andrea Bosio & Gabriele Mariotti Interviews: Martina Muzi Editing and post-production: Gabriele Mariotti Post-production audio: Shakeeb Abu Hamdan Subtitles: Alessia Santoro, Manuel Francolini, Silvia Ciotto 99 DOM-INO was commissioned and first exhibited as part of La Biennale di Venezia - 14th International Architecture Exhibition: "Fundamentals", curated by Rem Koolhaas and was produced with the generous support of Fundación Alumnos47
