    • LG PD233. Shot for Instagram.

      from Richard Humphries / Added

Instagram recently updated their App across iOS and Android, an update that brings a killer feature for Film Makers: Upload videos already stored on your device, and cut with a basic trim function. This opens the possibility to shoot as you choose, with the kit of your choice and edit with the NLE of your choice. Ooooooh. So. This video, I shot with my usual DSLR set-up, edited in Premiere Pro, created a 15 second piece of music in GarageBand and output my usual 1080P H.264 file. Shooting and editing took less than 2 hours. This file I uploaded to Dropbox and downloaded to my Android phone because I know I can add it to the video library on Android (not so simple on my iPhone). However, the Android Instagram app gave me the option to upload a video either from the library OR from Dropbox. Cool. I uploaded the video, chose my thumbnail frame, tagged the post carefully and sent it to all my platforms. I'm really looking forward to how it performs. YouTube is the obvious platform for discovery of video content, but Instagram (and Vine) are a much less crowded space. Also, shooting for these platforms has its challenges. Instagram has a 15 second limit, Vine even shorter at 6 seconds, plus both formats are 1:1, i.e. square! It's a whole new film making mindset. I had to think very carefully how I framed each shot, although I was not terribly successful and did some re-positioning in post. Disclaimer: Limitations - I love them! They make you focus! I guess the point of this exercise was to explore this new way of distributing video content. Web video is basically Social Media, and as someone who works to build an organisation's brand presence through web video, I feel it's essential to grab these new opportunities - very soon they could be part of our daily business-as-usual.

      What are Tags?

      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
