The second in a series of 3 ski-travel episodes (Ep1: Kashmir - A Skier's Journey / Ep3: Freshfield Icefield - A Skier's Journey), skiers Chad Sayers and Tobin Seagel continue their worldly winter journey arriving in La Grave, France - home to the Téléphérique La Grave-La Meije, a quirky yet stalwart cable car that transports skiers to 3200m, high in the Southern French Alps. Here, the terrain is wild, unmarked, and unpatrolled - a stripped down, raw version of big mountain skiing. With 2km of vertical drop, a simple ski run journeys through a labyrinth of glaciers, couloirs, and forest glades. Local freerider Bruno Florit, and UIAGM mountain guide Joe Vallone share how unique and special La Grave is, but also reveal the respect a skier must have for the mountain when in search of such deep rewards. Here is Webisode #3 of Black Diamond Equipment's Ski Here Now, a three-part web series that takes a Zen look at skiing in the big mountains of Europe, featuring Black Diamond skiers in France and Switzerland. The Ski Here Now webisodes will be released in November, December and January exclusively in the Black Diamond Journal. The series kicked off with Webisode #1 in La Grave (http://www.vimeo.com/16322600), where the Telepherique and Black Diamond are official partners. Martin Webrant, Ptor Spricenieks, and David Pitschmann were the featured BD riders in Episode #1 and arrived at the perfect time for sweet conditions. Webisode #2 (http://www.vimeo.com/17343813) featured a ski adventure in Zermatt with alpinist, shredder of steeps and Zermatt-local, Samuel Anthamatten. Webisode #3 features BD riders Tor Eggeboe and Nicolas Aubert as they go exploring the remote valleys and dramatic lines of the little known Parc National des Ecrins just behind La Grave.

Installation for the national art event "Imaginez Maintenant" 01/07 to 04/07/2010 Hôpital de La Grave - Toulouse Nicolas Dorval-Bory / Raphaël Bétillon Music : Michael Andrews - Socks on ears More on www.betillondorvalbory.com. PAYSAGES EN EXIL seeks to create, along the hospital of La Grave in Toulouse, an experimental journey in which the visitor is invited to explore an unlikely landscape, a condensation of climates, a mix of Natures from all over the world. The project finds its genesis in the description of “wandering plants phenomenon” made by Gilles Clément : “Plants travel. Grass mostly. They silently move in the way of the winds. Nothing can stop the wind. By harvesting clouds, one would be surprised to get imponderable seeds mixed with loess, fertile dusts. In the sky yet unforeseeable landscapes are being designed. Chance organizes the details, uses every possible vehicle to distribute the species. Everything suits the transport, from ocean currents to shoe soles. Most of the trip belongs to animals. Nature charters birds, berry eaters, gardening ants, subversive and quiet sheeps, which fleece holds fields and fields of seeds. And also man. Restless animal, always in the move, free swapper of diversity.” In an acclimatization space – a long agricultural greenhouse – are prepared medicinal plants seedlings coming from the five continents. Having “blindly” chosen one of them, the visitor continues its journey and enters a thick cloud, a dense mist born from the spraying of the Garonne river, on the Viguerie footbridge. At the end of this vaporous trail, a surprising garden welcomes him, inviting him to plant the seedling that he has carried so far. With the help of the ACB / Banque Populaire

Ptor Spricenieks is better known for his big mountain skiing exploits than his yodeling talents. Turns out he's pretty dang good at both. Ptor recently sent us this drool-worthy clip from his 2008-09 season.

It was a classic La Grave day. By the time we had coffees at Lionel’s Bar and passed by the BD Test center downtown, the crack of noon loomed on the horizon. But a wise man once told me that there’s always time for a second cup and so we let the day warm up a bit more while having another at the 3200 top station restaurant. Today we’d take every opportunity to muster the best out of “blown-out” January backcountry conditions. Our objective of a night in the Refuge Promontoire and a run down Les Enfetchores was definitely going to be pending on what we’d find out there. More photos and interview on: http://bit.ly/hFH51w "The area from the Meije valleys to La Grave is unique in the world. Up high, a small ski lift serves a piste on the glacier. Apart from that, there is nothing or close to nothing ... the only things are off-piste, ski-touring routes on the glacier, valleys, couloirs and forest -- almost 2000 vertical meters of pure mountain. Here, outside the only marked trail, there is no ski patrol and the area is not secured. Skiers accept their own responsibility. Keeping with the image of the area, the system established by La Grave is, to our knowledge, the only one like it in the world. We are four patrollers employed by the municipality. Our role is to keep an eye on the security situation in the area, to play a role of light prevention for the clients and an advisory role to the municipality for the opening or closure of the cable car." Jean Charles Bonsignore, Mountain Risk Patroller
