Chris Field, a leader of the 2007 Nobel Prize winning team and lead author of the study on the effects of global climate change, was the keynote speaker at Tahoe South's Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan 10. This year's conference, hosted by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, examined current and future climate change expectations, policy matters, Hurricane Sandy and avalanche forecasting, awareness and safety. Field was part of the Nobel Prize winning team that assessed the scientific, technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of the vulnerability (sensitivity and adaptability) to climate change and the negative and positive consequences for ecological systems, socio-economic sectors and human health, with an emphasis on regional and cross-sectoral issues.

International advocate for water quality and policy Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of renowned pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, was the featured speaker at the 2010 Siebens Binz—Tahoe Forum on the Sierra Nevada College campus on August 28th. The event highlighted Ms. Cousteau’s worldwide journey to educate people about the water issues that affect us all—from Botswana to Lake Tahoe. The 2010 Siebens Binz—Tahoe Forum continues SNC’s more than decade-long tradition of bringing high-profile speakers to the community. The event was created in 1997 in alignment with the mission of Sierra Nevada College, which emphasizes environmental, social, economic, and cultural responsibility and sustainability. This program has been embraced by the community, thanks to Nancy Binz who, with her financial support (as well as of Sierra Nevada College in general), has elevated the Siebens Binz-Tahoe Forum to a status unimagined thirteen years ago.

This ski film was made during the epic snow year of 1994-95 around Lake Tahoe with exquisite 8mm tape technology. Two 17-18 year olds travel around the lake in the likes of the characters of the movie Ski School to find cliff drops, bombholes, continued release of Marker bindings, July skiing at Squaw, August skiing off of Carson Pass, and a little bit of dirt skiing for good measure. The film also shows the first meeting of Mike Tierney before he became the Jackson Hole first descent legend...oh how fun it was to be young. Zach Goodin even helps shred the gnar at Alpine. On a final note, all the professional editing was done with the '2 VCR dub' technique. Enjoy the radness....

Back for more, its now the 1995-1996 season and the kids are now attending collegiate studies in Colorado with a newly acquired Hi8mm video camera. The season ended a bit short for a few of the athletes, but at least they are making huge salaries being unprofessional skiers. Therefore, expect some skiing, puking, a couple trips to Utah, Jackson Hole, Steamboat, a crash in Heart Chute, and a big blue lake called Tahoe. Enjoy skiing by Mike Tierney, Zach Goodin, and others. Of course, we tried our hardest to emulate the popular Whiskey movies at the time....I mean, we just had to.
