John Lincoln from Ravenswood Manor was curious about the steam that constantly seems to be emanating from the ground at Lathrop Homes (the housing complex at the intersection of Damen, Diversey and Clybourn). He added that someone has built a fences around them like they're natural geysers. We wondered, too! And here's what we found. • Fighting For Home

      from Rhyne Piggott / Added

Walking around the sprawling riverfront campus of Julia C. Lathrop Homes in Chicago it’s easy to see why residents and alumni including Sondra Cornwell and Scott Shaffer are fighting to keep it open. For much of its 72-year history the housing project has been home to an ethnically diverse mix of low and middle-income residents, but the past three decades have marked a steep decline. Of the 924 units, only 217 are occupied. Residents and community groups say the Chicago Housing Authority is to blame. CHA claims changes in laws and the increased poverty of the residents make financing the project impossible. The solution they say is to demolish Lathrop Homes and replace it with a mixed-income complex. This video was published on usatoday.com.
