After Superman is an experiential, forced perspective installation, set to Laurie Anderson’s O Superman. An individual entering the artwork is confronted with 48 different sized glowing cubes, (mounted from 4-6 feet in height) scattered and suspended in the space. The audience walks through, exploring the seemingly random array of boxes, while the lights within each cube pulse, turning on and off. At the far end of the room sits a backlit chair facing the installation. The moment an individual takes the seat, the boxes resolve into a 8x6 pixel grid on which patterns can be discerned from the formerly chaotic light display. Here, one is confronted with the evidence of the aftershock caused by a single moment in space and time. It is impossible to discern the magnitude of the ripple effect any one instant bears, without the multiple perspectives provided by the passage of time. After Superman expands the singular moment achieved at the forced perspective, into a spatial imagining of its repercussions. Laurie Anderson’s O Superman provides a mesmerizing and rhythmic soundtrack for the piece. Released in 1982, O Superman’s uncomplicated arrangement metronomically marks time, setting the pace at which the work is designed to be explored. Conceptually, O Superman finds its link with the installation through its ability to transcend time. Nearly two decades after O Superman’s release it became irrevocably intertwined with the events of 9/11 as its prescient lyrics came to pass. Despite the gap in years, O Superman became a reflection of the event, a temporal exchange between the present and past. After Superman is equally a record of a moment in time. Its viewers are invited into a dialogue with the effects of an action, and taken through both a temporal exploration of space and a spatial exploration of time. For this year's expanded Big Ears coverage, videographers Chris White and Ian Cone covered as much of the festival as two men could possible tackle. The result of their hard work is a lush and impressionistic visual recap featuring live performances by Holly Herndon, HIVE, Zs, Ben Frost, Laurie Anderson, Omar Souleyman, the Kronos Quartet, Swans, and many more. The short film, edited by Mason Brown, embodies just a taste of Big Ears' essence, and focuses on the broad and beguiling lineup of visionary music the festival brings to Knoxville, Tenn., for one weekend in March.

I swear that the richBitch Chicago people at the Harris, and I mean fellow audience members in best available seating, have no cultural appreciation for ad hoc educational videography, or the concept of documentary video maker shooting stuff preserving it for others on the planet to see. Yet again today I was rudely called a thief to my face, accused of stealing people's stuff, at the conclusion of this awesome performance, courtesy of a tweeded twee fellow on my immediate left, 3rd row center. Anyway, those of you who love Laurie since the 70s and her _United States Live_ or _Mr. Heartbreak_ LP, and earlier than that, you get it. Laurie gets it. The people who are new to avant-garde music: I hope that this film will turn you onto one of the greatest treasures of USA culture, Laurie Anderson, widow of Lou Reed. Kronos Quartet? Not too shabby, either. Entire performance done in one take, per Dogme 95. And I got me a ticket for not too much loot for the Kronos Quartet MY LAI spectacle/performance in the very same row. When? January 2016. See you then, tweeded twee Harris people (with faces like horse-marshmallow pies).
