Read the profile: http://to.pbs.org/fudCZe Photographer John Moore is no stranger to combat. As a member of an Associated Press team in 2005, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and he's done extended stints in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Africa, Mexico and Nicaragua and elsewhere in the last 20 years. Yet despite his relative comfort with being on the frontlines, Moore told the NewsHour from his hotel room in Cairo that his latest assignment -a six-week trip that took him to the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya - might have been his most dangerous. Moore recorded the interview for us after sneaking out of Benghazi, Libya en route back to his home in Denver.

A film by Nick Francis (www.speak-it.org) & Marc Silver (www.marcsilver.net) An intimate portrait of Omar, a 17 year old stranded in a refugee camp since the 2011 war in Libya. The film offers a unique perspective of one person amongst thousands waiting for a chance to start their life again in a safe country. When war broke out earlier this year in Libya, thousands of refugees from countries such as Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea, who were living in or transiting through the country at the time, were forced to flee for their lives yet again. They are now waiting in refugee camps along the Tunisian and Egyptian borders - unable to return home due to war or persecution, unable to return to Libya due to ongoing violence and discrimination, and unable to stay in Tunisia or Egypt, countries both undergoing their own political upheavals. Condition ONE is a mobile media technology company developing the tools and platform to combine filmmaking, photojournalism and mobile devices to pioneer powerful immersive experiences. facebook.com/ConditionOne1 twitter.com/danfung --- The Libyan desert near Ras Lanouf March, 2011 Demonstrations have given way to bloody conflict. Battle lines sway back and forth as the Benghazi-centered ragtag rebels combat Tripoli's mercenaries and loyalists. Pro-Gaddafi forces mount their first coordinated offensive, exposing the rebels as woefully untrained and unorganized. Defiance turns to anguish when casualties mount. Slivers of hope rest on defecting army generals and foreign intervention. Photojournalist Patrick Chauvel brings us this immersive video from the rebels' front lines. "It's a very sad story," he says. "These guys are students, they're hairdressers, they're bakers, bankers, philosophers, teachers. They are no military." Chauvel is concerned for his safety. Gaddafi loyalists target the media and could cut off any escape. Four New York Times journalists are missing at the time and an Al Jazeera cameraman dies in the days that follow. Patrick says fighting in the flat, open desert divides the rebels into two camps: lucky and unlucky. Shelling hits at random, missing by hundreds of meters one moment and striking a direct hit the next. Chauvel fears the misses are the warning shots. He plans to escape before the battle becomes a massacre. -Powered by Condition ONE Mode: R&D Beta 1.2

CONDITION ONE IMMERSIVE VIDEO APP TO LAUNCH ON NOVEMBER 11th, 2011 Download it now in the App Store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/condition-one/id440571303?ls=1&mt=8 DEVELOPED BY DANFUNG DENNIS, ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR OF HELL AND BACK AGAIN Brooklyn, NY (November 11th, 2011) - Condition ONE LLC today announced that Condition ONE, an immersive video application for Apple tablet devices, will officially launch through the iTunes App StoreSM today November 11th, 2011. The Condition ONE app gives users the ability to look in any direction while viewing footage. By pivoting and tilting the iPad, one literally manipulates the corresponding field of view. The highly sensitive motion controls produce the illusion of looking through a window into another reality, giving a visceral sense of ‘being there’. Condition ONE will offer highly engaging storytelling with a focus on visual content conducive to being experienced firsthand. “Condition ONE offers a full spectrum enterprise solution for media companies needing to innovate and engage their audiences on the iPad,” said Condition ONE Founder and CEO Danfung Dennis. “Condition ONE has created a new type of video technology to lead media companies into the tablet market. We merge technology and creativity to push the limits of visual content to create immersive experiences on tablet devices.” Danfung Dennis director of the 2011 Sundance-winning documentary HELL AND BACK AGAIN conceived the Condition ONE technology while covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as a photojournalist. The traditional two-dimensional image, he felt, was losing its impact in conveying the emotion and complex realities on the ground. “Condition ONE is creating a new medium through technology and powerful content is at the core of the Condition ONE application,” said co-founder Karol Martesko-Fenster. “Condition ONE is focused on rapidly expanding the company’s next generation product offerings: a proprietary tablet app, an immersive camera system, a streamlined workflow, advanced post-production technologies, and an immersive video player with a highly engaging interface.” Media companies can license the technology and embed the immersive platform into their existing apps or create a branded channel within the Condition ONE app. Condition ONE is currently compatible with the iPad, followed by Android tablets next year, and becomes available for download from the iTunes App Store November 11th, 2011. While traveling, he struck up an unlikely friendship with a Libyan hippie, and when revolution broke out in Libya, Matt joined his friend in the fight against dictator Muammar Gaddafi. With a gun in one hand and a camera in the other, Matt fought in -- and filmed -- the war until he was captured by Gaddafi forces and held in solitary confinement for six months. Two-time Academy Award nominated documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry tells this harrowing and sometimes humorous story of a young man’s search for political revolution and personal transformation.

Testament is a collection of photographs and writing by late photojournalist Chris Hondros spanning over a decade of coverage from most of the world's conflicts since the late 1990s, including Kosovo, Afghanistan, the West Bank, Iraq, Liberia, Egypt, and Libya. Hondros was not just a front-line war photographer, but also a committed observer and witness, and his work humanizes complex world events and brings to light shared human experiences. Evident in his writings, interspersed throughout, Hondros was determined to broaden our understanding of war and its consequences. This video introduces a selection of powerful images taken from Testament accompanied by audio of an interview with Chris first broadcast on NPR on March 26, 2007, as part of the interview ‘A War Photographer’s View of Iraq’. Music in the video is Concerto grosso in F minor, Opus 1, no. 8 by Pietro Locatelli (1695-1764) performed by American Virtuosi Baroque Orchestra under the musical direction of Kenneth Hamrick. Kenneth and Chris worked together on a series entitled ‘Sound and Vision’ which encompassed live music performance alongside projections of Chris’ images. A special thanks to both NPR and Kenneth Hamrick for their contribution to this piece. Testament is now available for purchase, with all Getty Images’ proceeds from the sale of the book being donated to The Chris Hondros Fund. Inspired by his life, work and vision, The Fund endeavors to bring light to shared human experiences by supporting and protecting photojournalists.
