Narrated by Devendra Banhart. (Support Tim Maia on iTunes - http://bit.ly/PUzVgr) This is the story of Tim Maia, possibly the greatest (and craziest) soul singer you never heard of. Infamous in Brazil, Tim was a soul grenade that exploded in the 70s. He single handedly revolutionized Brazilian popular music and had the best time ever doing it. His story is one of humourous excess in every way imaginable and there’s something for all the family: drugs, women, money, guns and even a UFO cult thrown in. He REALLY lived the dream, always with a smile. This animated film has been created in a close collaboration between SuperHeroes Amsterdam, ShopAround and record label Luaka Bop, to celebrate Tim’s album launch and introduce the world to a soul superstar. After a decade of legal wrangling, Luaka Bop’s Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia is a fifteen track survey of Maia's 1970s recordings, completely remastered and packed with the sweetest warmest sun drenched soul you can imagine. So don your white robes, drop a tab or two and get wild for Tim Maia’s first big worldwide release. VIVA TIM! http://www.nbcnewyork.com/video/#!/the-scene/top-stories/video-override/Janka-Nabay-and-The-Bubu-Gang-at-MoMA/169622716 We spoke with Janka Nabay and The Bubu Gang after their performance at MoMA's "MoMA Nights" series which is curated by Olivier Conan of Barbes. Nabay taught his native Bubu music to a few Brooklyn-based musicians to create newfangled, feel-good, Sierra Leonean folk-dance music that anyone from age 5 to 95 could enjoy. The group's debut LP, En Yay Sah, just came out on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label.

During SXSW, concert goers take in an absurd amount of music. Hyper-stimulated on every level, it is easy for the lines to blur from one band to the next. Unfortunately, for many bands, playing their hearts out is just not enough to get noticed in the SXSW sea. Enter Janka Nabay. To say that Nabay and his Bubu Gang stand out amongst the 20-something year-old indie bands is an understatement. We are safe to bet that Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang were the only band repping "bubu music" during SXSW, and needless to say this got our attention. Nabay's showcase, in a backyard on the East Side of Austin, was a welcomed vacation for our ears. The crowd was dancing, the vibe was just right. Although Nabay completely won our hearts when we interviewed him at the W Austin, seeing him live and in action sealed the deal. New York is lucky to now claim the former Sierra Leonean as one of our own. - Annick Mayer

After a full week of shows and sunshine, our last day in Austin at SXSW went out with a loud and raucous bang. The Arcade hit up GUARDS at the Brooklyn Vegan Showcase, A$AP Rocky in a giant barn, Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang in a sunny backyard, wrapping it all up in the wee hours of the night at the epic Red Bull party with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Erykah Badu, and Nas. We invite you to relive the day with us in 44 seconds. Tunes coming from “D’Evils 2008″ by Talib Kweli http://Arcade44.tv
