In 2012 we had the opportunity to make visuals for the annual MEF party during the world mobile congress. We created a sort of low-poly look which blends with 3D and dynamic particles. The whole idea was to make the colors enhance the buildings beauty. The Picasso Museum, where the event took place, has these beige stone walls. So we wanted warm light and smooth movement in order to make the guests comfortable. Production: Alex Rivas Art Direction: Lucas Stolz, Jakob Konrad (Kounichiwa) Illustration and Jazz-Player's animation: Lucas Stolz 3D and all other animation: Jakob Konrad

Stuart Hall interviewed by Sut Jhally on the upcoming 2nd edition of Policing the Crisis Stuart Hall on the reissue of Policing the Crisis: A seminal figure in cultural studies weighs in on a classic and enduring work of scholarship Policing the Crisis: Mugging, the State and Law and Order, first published in 1978, is perhaps the classic work of the formative period of British cultural studies. Written by Stuart Hall, Chas Critcher, Tony Jefferson, John Clarke, and Brian Roberts, it has stood for more three decades as a breathtaking example of what has been called “conjunctural analysis” -- a form of inquiry that brings critical theory to bear on real-world practice. The starting point for Hall and his co-authors is a single event – the unprecedented 20-year prison term handed out in England to three teenage boys for a “mugging.” From there the authors examine how politicians exploited larger fears about crime and cultural disintegration to pave the way for the reactionary social and economic policies championed by the conservative British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. The result is a tour de force of cultural analysis -- a close reading of the political uses of fear that continues to resonate today. This past August, in anticipation of Palgrave MacMillan’s long-awaited release of the second edition of Policing the Crisis in March, MEF executive director Sut Jhally sat down with Stuart Hall at his home in London to discuss the book’s core concerns. In this excerpt from the interview, Hall describes what English culture and politics were like when the book was first published, and explains why critically engaging the cultural politics of identity, fear, and authoritarian control remains as important as ever today.
