Brooklyn resident William Thomas Porter builds wonderful - and really weird - bikes. "I wouldn't call them mutants," he says of his bike caricatures, "because that would make them sound ugly. It's more like creating this... new splendid form." We followed him around for a about a year documenting his projects and cajoling him into demonstrating the bikes' awesomeness in a series of humorous, fast-paced vignettes. Throughout the short Tom chats with good friend (and sometimes collaborator), Diego Guzman, about how and exactly why he does what he does. The Last Gun is a mechano-robotic flute built out of a disabled shotgun and salvaged industrial components. The gun barrels have been transformed into a fully functional double-flute, which is played by compressed air. The mechanics are controlled via the use of open-source electronics using an Arduino microprocessor and the data visualization is accomplished through a Raspberry Pi board. The programmable robot graphically charts and then musically depicts the rise & fall of annual U.S. arms exports over 5 decades. The flute’s aural response is based upon a value judgment. It is programmed to play a somber melody for every rise in arms exports and an upbeat tune for every year the arms exports drop. This work is the next iteration of the Chifte Kavali ( http://vimeo.com/45427394 ).

Protochiptune is a CMOS based 1-bit synthesis project that uses simple digital logic chips to produce music. With the help of Voltaic Systems, this project is now 100% solar powered and can make music off the grid. This presentation was in association with 3rd Ward where I teach workshops on how to build electronic musical instruments and small scale portable solar systems. The first-ever Nerdy Derby will take place at World Maker Faire New York on September 29th and 30th at the New York Hall of Science in Queens. Visitors can bring their own cars to race, choose from a selection of pre-built cars, or make their cars on site in our workshop. Questions? Massimo Banzi (flanked by Tom Igoe and Dave Mellis) gave this talk at World Maker Faire 2010 in New York. In case you couldn't be there, or in case you want to see it again, here it is. Apologies for the less than stellar video and audio quality. I shot it with my Flip Video, which is ok, but not at all spectacular. I used a monopod, which is why it's not super jittery, but it means I had to stand in one place for 50 minutes. When the camera sways a bit from side to side, it's me shifting my weight because my feet hurt. Too much information? Nonsense. video by Johngineer
