Children working on tobacco farms in the United States are exposed to nicotine, toxic pesticides, and other dangers, Human Rights Watch said in a report released recently. While US law prohibits the sale of tobacco products to children, children can legally work on tobacco farms in the US. The world’s largest tobacco companies buy tobacco grown on US farms, but none have child labor policies that sufficiently protect children from hazardous work.

On assignment for National Geographic, Marcus Bleasdale photographs Norwegian whaling communities where fisherman hunt minke whales in Norway's domestic waters north of the Arctic Circle. As social pressures mount with an international moratorium in place and younger generations leaving to explore new livelihoods, these once vibrant communities are dying.

          • Dear Obama by Marcus Bleasdale

            from VII / Added

Since September 2008, at least 2,000 civilians have been killed and nearly 3,000 others have been abducted during attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA, a Ugandan rebel group, operates in the border region between northern Congo, the Central African Republic and south Sudan. Many of the victims, including children, were beaten to death, had their skulls crushed or their heads sliced with machetes. Abducted children are forced to kill their family members. Joseph Kony and the LRA has been operating like this in the area for over 25 years. On May 24, 2010, President Obama signed into law legislation committing the U.S. government to develop within 180 days a comprehensive, multilateral strategy to protect civilians in central Africa from LRA attacks, and take steps to permanently stop the violence. By November 24, 2010 the Obama administration is due to publish the options for this new strategy.

In 2010, Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and VII Photo launched "Starved for Attention," an international multimedia campaign to rewrite the story of childhood malnutrition. Petition signatures were collected from people around the world who joined us in demanding that donor nations stop supplying nutritionally substandard food to malnourished children. At MSF's clinic in the Balabala district of Djibouti, doctors and nurses scramble to treat a never-ending influx of young malnourished patients. Last year, the clinic treated nearly 1,730 malnourished children under five years old. In this multimedia reportage shot by photojournalist Marcus Bleasdale, hear clinic workers speak about the successes and frustrations of their work.
