1. Llamar a los Muertos a Casa (Calling Home the Dead)

Para más información o para comprar el DVD con todas las versiones y contenidos adicionales, visite nuestra página web: www.callinghomethedead.com As the villagers of Lake Pátzcuaro lovingly clean and prepare the graves with beautiful handmade ofrendas, blankets of marigolds, special foods–they prepare for a shared remembrance called Día de los Muertos: Day of the Dead. They shoot rockets into the heavens to awaken the departed souls and call them home. More tone poem than traditional documentary, Calling Home the Dead transports the viewer in a compelling celebration of the continuity of life and the enduring love of family and friends. Images saturated with color and life join a magical soundtrack of original and local music; and a window is opened to another world. Available in English, Spanish and Spanish with English subtitles. This is a video to reveal to Hispanic kids, many of whose parents came from Oaxaca, some aspects of Oaxacan culture -- houses, cooking methods, meals, native costumes, the Guelaguetza dance festival, the Day of the Dead with its skull face painting and wide use of skulls and reverential visits to cemeteries, and, finally, the folk-art figures of paper maché or carved wood called alebrijes. The slide show uses a background of Oaxacan music: in order, "El Diablo" performed by Los Folkloristas, "Orgulloso Oaxaqueña" performed by Banda Travieza, "Canción Mixteca" performed by Mariachi Vargas, and "El Torito" performed by Las Folkloristas. This was originally created as an educational project for Friendship Group 1 of the Neighborhood Youth Association, a group of first through third grade students.

Excerpt from The Color Collective's video and sound installation, Color Rhythm. This video consisted of 3 synchronized channels and was projected onto two walls at The Textile Museum of Canada for the exhibition Wanderlust, curated by Karie Liao during the fall of 2012. During their MFA program at Concordia University in Montréal Québec, from 2009 - 2012, The Color Collective (Johanna Autin, Carissa Carman, and Sarah Gotowka) sustainably grew and harvested plants for natural dying processes with the absence of machinery, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. Color Rhythm captures the repetitive rhythm surrounding the labor of these actions. Color Rhythm has also been exhibited at Concordia University in Montréal Quebec, La Rochelle France for the 2011 International Symposium & Exhibition on Natural Dyes, and as part of The Color Collective's presentation at the 13th Biennial Symposium of The Textile Society of America in Washington DC on the panel Material Matters: The Politics of Making and Materials chaired by Ruth Scheuing and Ingrid Bachmann.

November 1st and 2nd celebrates, Día de Muertos! Remembering family and friends that have passed away, the tradition is as ancient as the Aztecs, and is celebrated all over the world. It’s nothing to be sad about. Build an alter to your dearly departed ones, honoring them with their favorite foods and drinks, decorate with Marigolds, and recall stories of their past lives in merriment. Here is a stop-motion animation inspired by “Danse Macabre” that Kirk and I created in honor of Día de Muertos and Kirk’s Grandfather, Grandpa Louis Dianda.
