Master Men Ganhong demonstrates the four methods of Dongyue Taiji. Dongyue Taiji (東岳太極) is a very special one. The brainchild of Professors Men Huifeng (门惠丰) and Gan Guixiang (阚桂香), Dongyue Taiji was declared by China to be the “Taiji for the new millennium” when unveiled on January 1, 2000. Professors Men and Gan are unique in the martial world. Not only are they husband and wife professors at the Beijing Sports University, they have both been awarded ninth duan (level 段), the highest rank that China bestows. They are the only married couple to achieve this recognition. Dongyue Taiji combines elements of the five major schools of Taiji: Yang, Chen, Wu, Wu, Sun (陈、杨、吴、武、孙). Despite being a new innovation, Dongyue Taiji is firmly rooted in traditional principles with a heavy emphasis on basics. Men Ganhong is the daughter of Professor Men Huifeng and Professor Gan Guixiang. She currently resides in Korea. She regularly visits America under the auspices of the Northern America Dongyue Taiji Association presented by Tai Chi Yuen Association (北美東 岳太極拳協會,由太極友緣人組織教學). All Chinese polearms fall under the category of Dadao, which literally means “big knife (大刀).” While the character dao is conventionally translated as “knife,” it may refer to any large blade that is curved. The character pu (朴) in Pudao can mean “simple” or “unadorned,” or even “sincere.” Today, Pudao refers to the generic polearm, which is a two-handed weapon consisting of a broad steel blade mounted on a wood or metal shaft. Master Yanqing Ding has trained martial arts since childhood. He is a layman disciple of Shaolin Temple and has demonstrated for China’s President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin. He is the head master of International Chi Institute in Alameda, California.
