WARNING: Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people are warned that this content contains images and voices of deceased persons. This tale produced by Lois Cook and her family very intimately shares the brutal, mostly untold history of what happened to the Nyangbul people of the NSW North Coast. You will be surprised at what Lois finds when she becomes history detective tracking down people and documents to see if the family's oral history is supported by other accounts from the 19th century. With the help of the staff of Ballina Library she discovers commentary by settlers and historians who were compelled to record the brutality against the local Indigenous people. This video was created by Lois Cook and her family in an unique collaboration with ABC Multiplatform Executive Producer, Catherine Marciniak, in a series of video production workshops. It is a special project for ABC North Coast's initiative UNTOLD. Thanks to Lois and Lewis Cook and their extended family for sharing this story of great sadness with us and we acknowledge them for their resilience and courage. In Guatemala, the systematic repression of indigenous people led to a bloody armed conflict from 1960 to 1996 that left behind more than 200,000 dead, the majority of whom were Mayas. In an environment of fear and threats, the photographer Miquel Dewever-Plana worked for years documenting the exhumation process and gathering testimonies of numerous victims that are now part of the book "The truth beneath the ground. Guatemala, the silenced genocide". Years later, he returned to the Mayan communities to deliver this book to those who had shared their stories.
