      • Allahabad Masterplan by Studio Symbiosis

ARCHITECT: Studio Symbiosis PARTNERS: Amit Gupta , Britta Knobel Gupta PROJECT LEADER: Joy Mondal PROJECT TEAM: Viraat Kumar, Md. Shaique Uddin, Rakesh Mathur, Pancham Pathania, Pranav Semwal, Saswata Haldar. LOCATION: Allahabad CLIENT: UPSIDC SITE AREA: 1500 Acres SANGAM Located in Allahabad the master plan takes into account the single most important feature of the city “Sangam”. It is the meeting point of the three holy rivers of India; Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati. It’s not just a spiritual marker but also a significant geological phenomenon and defines unity and amalgamation. The concept of “Sangam” has been integrated in the master plan as a diagram of connectivity and unity. The universal symbol of unity creates a continuous loop defining three zones. These zones depicting the trinity has been inscribed as a formal as well as a programmatic element of the master plan. It is grafted in the heart of the master plan and acts as a melting point for the city as a commercial and recreational hub. SITE The site is interrupted due to the existing settlements and ponds that cannot be moved. The design creates a sweeping gesture combining the site into one entity and still accommodating the villages on the site. This results in creating a comprehensive connected scheme. AMALGAMATION The brief requires for a mixed use master plan consisting of Industries, Residential, Housing, Institutional, Commercial and Mixed use. The various typologies have been morphed from one to another and corresponds to the zoning, this results in amalgamated master plan design whereby the perception during movement is a gradual change in the form resulting in a sense of unity of the diverse typologies. UNITY The built and the green have been designed as one system. Green network and the built environment are integrated into one, which seamlessly flows on the site. This unified system of built and green was important to create a city level and neighborhood green, which creates a sense of living within the nature in the master plan along with a layer of pedestrian network. The star form of the green transforms from unbuilt to the built feature of the buildings in the central Sangam area, along with the neighborhood green morphing into urban green plazas. SKYLINE The functional diversity has been unified by a seamless skyline. This undulating skyline merges the various functional requirements of the master plan into a visually coherent system. SUSTAINABILITY The master plan is designed as a Sustainable master plan and a zero discharge city. At the planning stage the green percentage, porosity of the materials, transportation network and walking distances have been accounted for. In the second stage of the design implementation elements of Energy, Water and Waste management systems have been embedded in the planning bylaws.

Programming by Marc Syp @ NBBJ, 2011/2012. Created in Grasshopper for Rhino. ---- From the archives, a video of an early version of a daylight gaming engine that I developed for a large corporate campus project (not pictured here, what you see is a generic site plan). In the latest versions I have developed a pretty sophisticated cost model, limited interoperability with Revit, and a series of other analysis modules, including a view analysis engine and aggregate shortest path calculations. The biggest breakthrough in the development of this system was the early decision to use daylighting guidelines (from Harvard's publications) as a generative tool, rather than attempting to do full-scale iterative analysis. This allows very rapid iteration with a degree of accuracy appropriate for Concept Design level explorations. (The video is captured in real time, no editing to speed up response times.) I am now adapting this system (and smaller subsets of the system) for other markets and project types within the firm, as well as adding functionality to improve the value of the tool. Note: This programming project won NBBJ Project of the Year (Ideas) in 2011. To see the winner of the NBBJ Project of the Year (Ideas) for 2010, please see Architecture: Realtime Physics for Space Planning. Music by Ratatat.

                  from Cibinel Architects Added

Recognizing the opportunity for enhanced facilities and a new and compatible use for the historic Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC), the Province of Manitoba decided to relocate the Assiniboine Community College to the abandoned BMHC site. The BMHC campus is an existing facility with a rich cultural heritage, situated in a pastoral setting. Through the ACC Campus Plan, we accounted for students and staff necessities in order to transform this former mental health campus into a vibrant post-secondary institution. The project has been organized into three phases. The first phase, the Manitoba Institute for Culinary Arts was completed in 2007. The second phase, the Len Evan’s Centre for Trades and Technology was completed in 2010. The third and final phase, the Parkland Building is to be determined.

Yes indeed. This is the latest design & engineering remix out of our exclusive Hoboken command center, featuring the Akai Miniak with the Roland TR707 rhythm composer in a mashup showing how mortgage banking invests in economic diversity as a cornerstone of community planning. Or something like that. The two public domain source reels for the video come from the always-appreciated Prelinger Archive at archive.org; the color clips are from Road To Better Living (1959), with the black and white footage lifted from Birth Of A City, which is undated but might be from around the mid-1950s. Coloroadonians might enjoy the vintage shots of Denver and its suburb of Broomfield, which are sprinkled throughout the black and white segments.
