1. Computer Vision - Discovering Depth

What you are seeing: The final picture is a depth image of a scene. Brighter pixels are close by, and darker pixels are further away. The white artefacts exist due to a degree of uncertainty. Two images seperated by a small distance were taken and compared to produce this image. Why it exists: I had to generate the final image as part a project for my computer vision at Georgia Tech class. Rendering the final image of each scene took anywhere to a second to an hour (the one above took around 30 minutes). Since I could only see the final output, I had no idea if it would take 6 more hours, or if it was almost done, so I periodically dumped the working image, and would check it out every couple seconds. Then I wondered what it would look like if it updated at 30fps, instead of several seconds per frame. I output all the images, converted it to a video, and thus, the video. How it works: In short, the algorithm scans horizontally for each small patch of pixels, looking for a closest match, the larger the disparity, the blacker the image, the shorter the disparity, the brighter. This takes advantage of a paralaxing effect. The artefacts exist due to either a false positive match, or no data simply existing (the face in the other image covered up the part of the wall that is white in the image you can see, so it just declares "could not find a good match".

Integrated Crop Management (ICM) is increasingly required as a standard for agricultural production around the world. We aim to address today’s critical agricultural and environmental challenges by creating a unique higher education programme in Switzerland about ICM. The Masters of Advanced Studies in ICM, also offered as a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS), will give students everywhere the opportunity to learn about sound crop management principles and to explore solutions that can be incorporated into practice and policy back home. Hear the story of one student, Mr Fred Asante, and why he chose to enrich his knowledge of sustainable agriculture with the MAS in ICM. Find out more at www.cabi.org/masicm
