This PSA was created in Spring 2014 by students at Riverside University High School in a Milwaukee Film Education Program On-site Workshop. In this six-week workshop, students learned about the PSA video genre, chose an issue that mattered to them, and identified a message they wanted to communicate to their peers. They were involved with the entire video production process--from conceptualizing, to shooting, to lighting, to editing. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support was provided by the Herzfeld Foundation and the Milwaukee Public Schools Partnership for the Arts and Humanities program. This PSA was created in Spring 2014 by students at Clarke Street Boys & Girls Club in a Milwaukee Film Education Program On-site Workshop. In this six-week workshop, students learned about the PSA video genre, chose an issue that mattered to them, and identified a message they wanted to communicate to their peers. They were involved with the entire video production process--from conceptualizing, to shooting, to lighting, to editing. This PSA is particularly poignant, however, as the issue they chose to address in late April was gun violence. As readers may recall, on May 21, Sierra Guyton, a member of the Clarke Street Club, was caught in the crossfire of a shooting on the playground. Because this incident occurred just days after the group had completed initial filming on their project on that same playground, we were unsure if they would want to complete it or if they would find the process too difficult. However, the youth came together and determined that the message was all the more important now and that they needed to finish the video “for Sierra” and film some additional material as well. The version of this video you’ll see here is their impassioned message to our community concerning this issue. This program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. In lore, seafaring men catch albatross for sport—and the albatross let them. Writhing on these ships and shores, these prisons and deathbeds, diminishes the birds to common creatures. The albatross lives in you and me; we feel the besieged bird in the balance sought in daily life. “Soar! Soar!” the Master commands, yet in soaring, the artist relinquishes rationality and reason for fairy tales, strife, and inexplicable genius unfettered by the domesticating reins of society.

Nick is in corporate finance for Reader’s Digest. Aliza is an eight year veteran of teaching third grade. But each year when the festival rolls around, they’re movie lovers more so than anything else Last year, Aliza and Nick saw somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 films. And that’s not likely to be an anomaly. They love all kinds of movies. At the festival, they’re always excited to see films you might not know about otherwise – foreign films, documentaries, little indies, or even big Oscar movies that no one else gets to see yet. Aliza got Nick into movies a few years back, and their interest has only grown and grown. The festival is great for them because they get to go crazy on movies for a while, and they absolutely love it. So long as they find someone to take care of their pup while they’re out watching films, all is wonderful. After the films get out, they like to grab a drink or a late dinner at Comet or Hooligans or some other local spot… where maybe, just maybe, the conversation might turn to movies. Then come up with your own reasons to join. Become a member today: http://mkefilm.org/membership

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
