Our interactions with various forms of media do not only entertain or inform us but can shape our worldviews on a daily basis. To try to get some insight into what sort of media have impacted Georgetown students’ lives, I asked three students in the Leavey Center’s Sellinger Lounge about a time when some piece of media they consumed, whether they read it, watched it, or anything else, changed their lives. I spoke with Omika Jikaria, Trevor Tezel, and Katherine Key (you might recognize the first two students from their successful GUSA campaign) about their experiences with media. Their life-changing moments covered a wide range of topics, including stress, NSA revelations, and gendered portrayals in the media.

Entry for the 'Girls Impact the World Film Festival' The Media influences the way our society view's women and how women view themselves. Before starting on this journey I hadn't realized just how great this influence was and I realized that most women are unaware as well. In this documentary I uncover the truth about the portrayal of women in the media, ask real women how they are affected by this portrayal of and most importantly, reveal how our society can take steps to better represent women as leaders, cultivators, and innovators. It's up to us women to take back control, come forward, and bring about change so that we are being heard and represented honestly. I’m Roxanna Woloshyn and I am a fourth year journalism student at the University of Regina. This is my video entry for the Hillberg & Berk Le Cirque Scholarship. I am pursuing a career in journalism because I want to tell the stories of women and girls who are misrepresented, silenced and neglected by the media and society. Many young women of my generation feel that the feminist movement has done its job and is no longer relevant. However, I see that women and girls continue to be misled and betrayed by the media everyday. So, I pledge to use my voice to spread the message of Miss Representation and challenge the media’s limiting portrayal of women and girls. Whether as a student or as a journalist, I will work to empower women and girls through each story I produce, and I will challenge the individuals who are actively working against us.
