In the Summer of 2014, newly retired from teaching, I took a two-month road trip to the West Coast. The beauty of the west is staggering -- there were times I had to stop driving so I could be still and allow it all to sink in. ** Key locations in this video include: Southern Illinois (the River-to-River race route in memory of my friend Jeff Yordy), Big Bend National Park, Saguaro National Park, Sedona and the Grand Canyon (with my companion Masako Bunny Doi), Redwoods National Park, US 101 in California (in memory of Grace Kaskie, Class of 2006), Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and a final night on the Mississippi River absorbing a glorious sunset. ** Music by Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Brian Eno, Nat King Cole, Maria Schneider, Anne Wilson (my sister), and Paul Ferguson (my brother). Shot with my iPhone 5c.

This is the story of Greenpeace's vessel, the Beluga, and her journey down the Mississippi River. On the way she encounters many violations of the Clean Water Act but she also encounters the individuals and organizations who are working to clean up this great river and her tributaries. I co-produced, directed, and edited this program through my company, Cherchez La Femme Productions. It was co-produced by Karen Hirsch and Greempeace USA. It has won many awards and enjoyed a widespread distribution since its initial release in 1990. We got grants to send VHS copies (remember those?) for free to classrooms and grassroots environmental organizations across the US. Most recently portions of it are featured in Mark Kitchell's film, "A Fierce Green Fire". It is distributed by The Video Project in San Francisco, CA.
