This is a short piece we shot and chopped when we went down to Monterey this weekend. The Monarchs migrate up and down the coast to try and survive the winter. We got a unique opportunity to photograph them off the beaten path. Tourists gather at the park in Pacific Grove to observe the monarchs over 60 feet away. We were given access to a nook where we could almost reach out and touch them. Historically, most of the western population of monarchs settled in the fog shrouded Monterey pine forest of Pacific grove. To survive, the Monarch migrates to safe overwintering sites that are neither cold enough to kill it nor so warm that it wastes precious energy flying too much. Monarchs west of the Rockies come to Pacific Grove and other locations along California's Central Coast. En route, they may travel as far as 200 miles a day, and fly as high as 10,000 feet. The magic and mystery of the Monarch migration has charmed and captivated Pacific Grove residents and visitors for many years. Unfortunately the phenomenon of the annual Monarch migration is endangered, The eastern population is being severely impacted by deforestation in its Mexican overwintering grounds and the western Monarchs are being squeezed by the constant pressures of coastal development and dwindling space. Monterey California, August 2010: The Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid made its driving debut on a closed road in Monterey California, just days prior to its appearance at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. After being shipped over from Germany by plane, engineers handed the keys of the new 918 Spyder Hybrid to Porsche AG Design Chief Michael Mauer. The car drove under its own power which comes from the mid mounted 3.4 liter V8 out of the RS Spyder as well as an all electric mode which powers just the front wheels.

from Monterey Museum of Art Added 32.4K 201 6

Motoi Yamamoto is an internationally acclaimed contemporary Japanese artist from Hiroshima, Japan, who creates elaborate, site-specific installations made entirely out of salt. Often in the form of large-scale labyrinths or aerial projections of typhoons, Yamamoto takes one of the earth’s oldest, most sought-after mineral elements to cover the entire gallery floors during a two-week residency at the Monterey Museum of Art—Pacific Street location. Traditionally used as a symbol for purification and mourning in Japanese culture, the artist’s use of salt emanates from a powerful personal experience in working through the death of his sister. His artwork is rooted in themes of life, death, and rebirth, and his process with salt has helped him cleanse his grief. Return to the Sea, Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto is organized by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, College of Charleston School of the Arts. Video produced by John Greenwald

Sometimes you have to escape... Starring 'The Lone Cypress Tree' check out my old friend 'Sunset Tree' back home https://vimeo.com/92588325 Captured from the iPhone 6+ and a few clips from the BMPC 4K edited on iMovie Music from the Vimeo Music Store - https://vimeo.com/musicstore/track/113848/basking-in-the-afterglow-by-drazy-hoops Technical and some tips: My top tip for getting a clear night shot that looks like you captured it under the moonlight from your iPhone is to capture it in the daytime and lock the exposure and focus on the bright sky, see the ending of the film. iMovie is a great App if you have an iPhone as you can bring the sound/music into the fore or background without the need for any sound mixing software. Videoshop is a great App for colour grading your iPhone clips, you an easily bring out the colour and shadows from an under exposed shot. Remember to lock your focus and exposure when shooting and adjust your brightness when doing so to preserve as much details as possible. I imported the BMPC 4K (after grading it on DaVinci Resolve) long clip from my Google Drive onto the iPhone and then split on iMovie, so you can easily use other clips/sounds to work on your mobile device. It's actually quite fun doing it tis way rather than your native editing software on the PC or MAC. Take some field sound recordings and you will have a great library to work with. The Swiftcam ML 3 axis Gimbal for mobiles is an amazing must have for mobile film making and all those clips with movement cannot be done on the bigger cameras so easily, I recommend it any day. The slomo does lose quality on the iPhone but works well when you have something in the foreground to focus on as the depth of field gives that background just a tinch of blur to mask the drop in quality. There are some really great musicians on the Vimeo Music Store, Drazy Hoops, Broke for Free, Chris Zabriskie, Maya Solovéy, The Upsidedown, Nicole Reynolds and David Balize just to mention a few of my favourites. Please feel free to ask me anything, there is one more film from my very short trip to the US still to come :)

Jeremy Clarkson called it the most exciting, best looking, most expensive, and the fastest road going Porsche ever made. We agree with Jeremy and that's why we decided to bring the CGT down for our trip to Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2010. Stopping at the coast off 17 mile drive, the boys at Wagenwerks talked it over with the birds, gained their cooperation, and snapped this quick short for us.
