Our goal was to set out and shoot a short film that was lit entirely by moonlight. We waited for the moon to become full and on the night of September 8th we set out to explore the coast in California and see what we could find. When we arrived at our location, the timing couldn't have been more perfect! It was around 12:30 AM and the moon was barely lighting the beautiful beach. The entire shoot took place between 12:30 AM- 2:00 AM. For the first two scenes were shot at a different location a few days before the moon became full. The first scene was shot at 1/25th, f/1.4, 25,600 ISO, The second scene was shot at 1/25th, f/1.4, 32,000 ISO Our settings for the rest of the video were around 1/30th, f/1.4, ISO 12,800. To give you a perspective of how dark it was, there are a couple photos in the behind the scenes below. We did not add any color grading, noise reduction, or sharpness. All of the clips are straight out of the camera shot in the PP2 setting. You will notice some purple fringing around the left side, The Metabones adapter that we rented had a light leak issue from what it looks like. Sony has done an amazing job in creating this camera especially after seeing the quality that has come out of this camera. Song used: Clouds over hills by A. *UPDATE* - Exclusive glimpse into the making of 'Alive' - behind the scenes film up now on.fb.me/behindalive "This planet is alive. If only we could know what it knows, see what it sees. Sometimes you feel like it's trying to tell you something, showing you where to look, how to see. Lighting up the darkness ahead, illuminating your soul." burn is honoured and excited to announce 'Alive', featuring the burn units, a rider-led initiative headed by the legendary Austrian snowboarder Gigi Rüf, star of many a Pirate Movie Production and hands-down one of the most stylish riders on the planet. In 'Alive' Gigi is joined by fellow burn units riders Norwegian freestyle prodigy Ståle Sandbech and ultra-smooth French sensation Arthur Longo. Filmed on location in Vorarlberg, Austria at Gigi's uncle's cabin last December, this was one of the most ambitious projects yet undertaken in snowboard filmmaking: shooting backcountry action by electric light and moonlight. As Director Per-Hampus Stålhandske put it, "there are so many things that can go wrong when you make a snowboard film: the weather, the snow, the light, the riders... adding darkness and studio lights to the mix was a huge risk, but mother nature was with us every step of the way. An amazing experience." The video was captured in Zermatt Switzerland on the bottom of the famous Matterhorn. Just for fun we went out on the evening of the 7th of March to capture some moonlight shots; with only the four of us to put it all together. We used a variety of techniques ranging from filming on skies with handheld gimbal, drone shots and and some time-lapse. Only due to cutting edge technology is it possible to capture the incredible images illuminated only by moonlight. For this purpose, a Sony A7S was used with ISOs between 40,000 and 51'200 with fully open aperture (2.8). The recordings were not stabilized afterwards. The gimbal system even worked at temperatures around -3 ° without problems. This also applies to the copter which functioned smoothly at a wind speed of over 15km / h, only the batteries had to be preheated. We have been meaning to capture these pure moonlight images since last year but had to cancel our first attempt in autumn due to rain. more infos on http://moonriders.ch --------------------------------Deutsch-------------------------------------------------- Am Fusse des Matterhorn bei Zermatt wurde dieses Video aufgenommen. Jedoch mussten wir bei einem ersten Versuch abbrechen, als wir vom Regen überrascht wurden. mehr Infos unter http://moonriders.ch --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music by Jonathan Geer http://jonathangeer.com Gear used: Sony a7S @ ISO 40’000-51’200 Slog2 Canon 5D Mark III with Magic Lantern for timelapse only Lenses: Canon 24mm f2.8, Canon 16-35mm f2.8, Tokina 24-70mm f2.8, Canon 70-200mm f4 UAV: DJI S900 with DJI A2 Flight Controller UAV Gimbal: FTBO G10 (no post stabilization) Handheld Gimbal:DYS HHG5D (no post stabilization) Gimbal Controller: 2 Basecam SimpleBGC 32bit V2.44b9

Ilargi argiak argiztatzen ditu bazterrak sekuentzia guztietan une batean edo bestean. Canon 400D kamera erabili da lehenengo sekuentzian eta Canon 550Da beste guztietan. Sigma 17-70 objektiboa kasu guztietan. VirtualDuben editatua. Edizio honekin, udatik negurako igarotzea irudikatunahi dut. This timelapse was shot using the Canon 5D Mark 2 and the Dynamic Perception Dolly rig that I have been beta testing for the past couple weeks. I'm really enjoying the system as its light enough for one person to carry around and setup. This was also the first time I have used any type of motion in any of my timelapse shots. The lenses used were the Canon 24mm f1.4L II, Sigma 20mm f1.8, Zeiss 35mm f2, Zeiss 50mm f1.4 and the Zeiss 85mm f1.4 The track that was used is "528491" from the "Inception" soundtrack.

Watch another moonlight experiment using the more sensitive 1D MKIV here: http://vimeo.com/21311814 In 1975 Stanley Kubrick stunned the world by filming some incredible scenes in his film Barry Lyndon, lit only by candlelight. He used lenses by Zeiss developed for NASA for use in the Apollo moon landings. Today, using a Canon 5D MK II and an EF50mm F1.0L lens, you can film under only moonlight. In this case, 30fps. Apart from the various transcoding processes from getting it off the camera, edited and onto Vimeo, there has been no post processing. No colour grading, no noise reduction, it's pretty much straight off the camera. The brighter shots that you can see were absorbing light from the street lamps of a carpark about 50-100m away. A couple of months ago I had the extreme pleasure of repeating Moonlight as a free climb. Moonlight buttress is probably the single best sandstone bigwall freeclimb in the world and to manage to scrap up it first try no falls was one of the highlights of my year, and sharing it with my bride to be made it even more special. This piece is a mix of 5d mark ii footage and timelapses shot on terrafirma mixed with iphone 4 footage! I brought my iphone up the climb accidentally and then figured I might as well shoot a little video while I was up there!! And so, a video short was born!!!

This is a follow up post to show how our Moonlight video looked like after it had been color graded. There were a handful of requests form viewers asking us to upload a graded version. We graded it with FilmConvert in Adobe Premiere Pro using the Sony A7s camera pack, Slog2 - S Gamut Profile, and the FJ 8553 ET FilmConvert Stock. It was amazing to see how much color the A7s was able to bring out once we applied the Slog2 - S Gamut Profile to the clips. We desaturated the final grade to keep the moonlight feel.
