In the summer of 2012, Tom Livingstone and Tom Ripley flew out to Alaska, North America, to attempt a new route on the Father and Son Wall of Denali. They are both students at Bangor University, North Wales, and are now in their 3rd and final year of studies. Denali, more commonly known as Mt. McKinley, is the highest mountain in North America. Unfortunately the pair did not attempt their objective, the new route, for a number of reasons. They did, however, make perhaps the youngest British ascent of the Cassin Ridge, a huge 8000 ft (nearly 3000 m) route on the South face of Denali. The pair spent 5 weeks in the mountains. They made acclimatisation climbs in the mountains above the Kahiltna Glacier, before warm temperatures forced them to move higher up the mountain. They spent 4 days getting to 14000 ft camp on Denali. Tom and Tom are indebted to the following organisations; without their support the expedition would not have taken place. Financial Support from: BMC , Mount Everest Foundation and Welsh Sports Association. Equipment was supplied by: Anatom, Cotswold Outdoor, First Ascent and Mountain Equipment. In July 2012, Tom Livingstone and Tom Ripley made a 2 day ascent of the Cassin Ridge on the South Face of Denali. This is perhaps the youngest British ascent. The pair spent 5 weeks in the Alaskan Mountains, climbing a number of routes in the Kahiltna Glacier basin, before moving to 14,000ft Camp on Denali. They intended to attempt a new route on the Father & Son Wall, a subsidiary face of Denali, but unfortunately did not. Five disabled veterans — among them, two single-leg amputees and two double-leg amputees — braved sub-zero temperatures, white-out blizzards and the threat of avalanches in an attempt to climb the tallest mountain in North America in June. The trip up Mt. McKinley, also known as Denali, with the group Disabled Sports USA - Warfighter Sports was led by Catonsville resident and executive director Kirk Bauer, along with two guides from Mountain Trip.

My wife Lori and I spent ten days in Alaska. Most of the photos and video were shot with the 5D mark ii and mark iii. I also used a Kodak Playsport a little bit. Please forgive the shaky cam in many of the shots, but I didn't have room in the luggage for a real tripod. Graphics were done in After Effects CS5. Thanks to Mike Stackhouse for letting me shoot and record his guitar and harmonica playing and singing.
