PS 144 students take a field trip with QMA School Trip Manager Lindsay Smilow up to the Catskills, NY to learn about the New York City Watershed and water supply system. Why, you ask? Because we have the scale model of the New York City watershed, a relief map measuring almost 700 square feet and weighing 10,000 pounds, built for the 1939 New York World's Fair. Fun fact, the model was never shown in its entirety at the 1939 New York World's Fair. So, after nearly 70 years in storage, the 27 panels were preserved and assembled here at the Queens Museum of Art in partnership with the Department of Environmental Protection. The Watershed relief map is now on permanent view in our galleries.

The fossils in the showcase are real. The prehistoric animals obviously not. The animals are computer generated ghost images projected in the showcase. They crawl out of the stone and come alive. This is a perfect combination of real museum objects and their reconstructions. Very educational, sensational. No heat or bright light on the objects... very safe.

This video describes a program I developed in 1978 to show how hands-on, participatory experiences for young children can enhance their understanding of sophisticated concepts regarding art and culture. I am pleased by its contemporary relevance.
