TAKEN FROM WWW.ARTONAIR.COM ------------------------------------------------------------------- Clocktower Gallery: Time Sync Laboratory #3: Japanther By Matt Reilly, Ian Vanek On exhibition from April 4, 2011 - May 2, 2011 On April 4, 2011, Matt Reilly and Ian Vanek of the band Japanther began their Time Sync Laboratory Residency at the Clocktower Gallery, during which they will create Eat the Butt, a multifaceted project exploring ideas of community and storytelling through audio art, installation work, and performance. This original work draws on stories told by fellow travellers from around the country, who will be invited to visit and call Japanther’s miniature recording studio, fabricated from a public pay phone booth and a two-way recorder embedded in the receiver. Through this project, Reilly and Vanek seek to recreate the sense of intimacy and community embodied in the experience of using a form of analog communication that is quickly becoming an object of nostalgic curiosity, particularly with the rising predominance of voiceless forms of correspondence such as texting and chatting. To further this sense of community, Reilly and Vanek will host 3 salon dinners with meals prepared by Chef Jenn Su, who specializes in cooking healthy, sustainable meals for touring musicians. Dinner guests will be asked to use the phone booth to record their stories, which will be used in Japanther’s final work of audio art. The work and accompanying interviews with the artists will receive their broadcast debut on ARTonAIR.org. Formed in 2001, Japanther has released over a dozen albums and toured in three continents Their artwork has been featured numerous art fairs and exhibitions including the 2006 Whitney Biennial as part of the Don’t Trust Anyone Over Thirty puppet rock opera. Additionally, Reilly and Vanek have collaborated with artists including Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Laurent P. Berger, Tony Oursler, Penny Rimbaud, Eileen Myles, robbinschilds, Dawn Riddle, Claudia Meza, Ninjasonik, Anita Sparrow and Spankrock to create original works of visual, film, and performance art. The Time Sync Laboratory and the AIR’s Audio Art Production Residency Program are made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, celebrating 50 years of building strong, creative communities in New York State's 62 counties, and the Jerome Foundation. ...DIRECT LINK... http://artonair.org/exhibition/time-sync-laboratory-3-japanther+ More details
