This rare and impressive musical automaton displays eleven animated figures representing a troop of roving musicians and featuring a tightrope walker performing on a high wire above. This magnificent automaton was made in France in the second half of the 19th century. Extremely imposing in size, it measures 34" high by 38" wide by 18" deep. The performers are accompanied by six alternating tunes played on an 11-1/2" cylinder music base including bells and drums concealed in the base. The automaton mechanism utilizes 23 stepped cams to create the action of the articulated figures. The carved gilt wood base features a French 8-day striking clock movement.
