        from Early Light Media Added

It was an honor to spend time with true heroes on this project, along with Livingston Productions and University of Maryland Children's Hospital. People caring for the tiniest and most vulnerable patients. This film was played at the unveiling of their long-awaited Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opening ceremony. The Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was opened in conjunction with the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics. The school's division of neonatology will provide advanced treatments for premature babies, including nutritional management and surgical interventions for birth defects including congenital heart disease, abdominal wall defects, cleft lip/palate repair and brain malformations. At 37,000-square-feet with 52 private rooms, the new NICU is three times the size of the previous. Rooms are big enough for families to stay together. Each room is equipped with controllable light and sound to help regulate circadian rhythms and mimic the environment within the womb. A large family lounge contains a kitchen, dining area and sitting room.

                  • Believe in 23 Weekers - Elle's NICU Journey

                    from Jessica Strom Added 230 0 1

In November of 2014, Anya & her husband Aaron were over 800 miles from where they lived and as they started their road trip home, Anya went into pre-term labor at just 23 weeks + 2 days gestation. They made it to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, where Anya delivered their twins, Mina & Elle. Heartbreakingly, Mina earned her angel wings while her sister Elle fought for her own life. Born weighing just 1 pound 3 ounces, Elle faced an uphill battle of unknowns. Jessica Strom, an internationally recognized NICU photographer, lives in the Kansas City metro and was introduced to Anya, Aaron & Elle by the NICU nurses when Elle was just 3 weeks old, weighing an ounce less than her birth weight. Anya & Aaron stayed in Kansas City, away from their home, family, and friends, to stay by Elle's side for the entire duration of their stay. At no charge to either family or hospital, Jessica photographed baby Elle with each pound she gained, sharing her story with the world whilst encouraging other NICU families, especially those with 23 weekers as well, of Elle's progress. On March 26th, 2015, after 4 months in the NICU and on Elle & Mina's due date, Elle was able to graduate from the NICU and go home weighing 5 lbs 11.9 ounces, on oxygen and a heart monitor. She's doing absolutely incredible and in absolute bliss at home with her mom & dad! This is Elle's story, in portraits and video. Very special thank you to all the neonatal intensive care unit staff at KU; Elle's story is your story too.
