Movement Reflection (2005) is a single channel, stereo audio/video presentation which results from a process of recycling and abstraction. It was created with Zach Poff and Brendan McCall. The audio, designed for a segment of a performance piece by MAP Intermedia, is a recycling and abstraction of a single synthesizer keystroke, processed via a simple algorithm to pass through a fluctuating virtual resonant environment. The video is a processed recording (using the same algorithm) of the piece as performed by Brendan McCall. The abstracted video was then recycled itself, becoming the sole theatrical lighting for that segment of the performance. Movement Reflection takes this entire process one step further by removing the performance context and presenting solely those design elements created for and by the performance itself. The video can perhaps be thought of as performance generating an environment, rather than the traditional inverse where design elements create an environment for performance.

11:00 News (2004) presents commentary on what has become the primary source of mass information dissemination in America today: the local news. Ostensibly reflecting the uniqueness of its local area, too often the local news is a prepackaged megaphone for corporate monoculture, redundant and anesthetizing. In this video, five different 11:00 news shows recorded in five different cities, each on the same night on local time, are shown simultaneously without edits. Each recorded broadcast alternatively surfaces and submerges, becoming progressively distorted and intertwined with other broadcasts, allowing a window into the repeated patterns of structure and content. Eventually the process reverts to the original programs, leaving us, after an unsettling experience, with the "goodnight" wishes of the info-tainment industry.

ScareMail 2013 web browser extension ScareMail is a web browser extension that makes email "scary" in order to disrupt NSA surveillance. Extending Google's Gmail, the work adds to every new email's signature an algorithmically generated narrative containing a collection of probable NSA search terms. This "story" acts as a trap for NSA programs like PRISM and XKeyscore, forcing them to look at nonsense. Each email's story is unique in an attempt to avoid automated filtering by NSA search systems. This film portrays the trapped-frustration, anxiety, and displacement that I would feel on a daily basis if I were to lose my vision. I was inspired by TommyEdisonXP and his YouTube channel and learned a lot from him about how blind people see...with their other senses, but mainly touch. There is a difference between being born blind and losing your vision; you don't realize that everyone around you can see if you're born that way.
