MIAMI, FL – Ivan Toth Depeña’s light-based installation “Reflect” was permanently installed in the Stephen Clark Government Center Lobby in Miami on November 18, 2011. Commissioned by the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places initiative, the work illuminates the dynamism of the lobby space and encourages a sense of discovery in the visitors. This dynamic art work is designed by the artist with the idea of welcoming visitors and employees to Government Center in a fun and interactive way,” said Michael Spring, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. “It will energize the lobby and symbolize the County’s commitment to be informative and responsive to our citizens.” As a main stop in Miami’s MetroRail system, the space serves as a hub for commuters; incorporating the notion of daily circulation into his piece, Depeña uses sensors and light to focus on the communal nature and circulatory qualities of the lobby. NUVE (Natural Ubiquitous Virtual Environment) is an artistic project, developed by Joao Martinho Moura (http://www.jmartinho.net), that aims to explore the artistic possibilities offered by the digital dance performances in the interaction between the individual and his virtual double. In NUVE we conceptualized, developed and implemented a digital artifact, resulting in a fluid digital performance based on the theme of the analog body versus the digital virtual body. The digital artifact is intended to create a virtual character, a virtual persona, or a virtual performer, which will interact with the real performer, aiming to explore new fields in the area of digital art. The motivation for this project is to create a scenic spectacle driven by an interactive and generative digital artifact, designed to reveal the emergence of virtual characters, auto discovered and experienced in moments of artistic creation, exploring artificial extensions of what makes us human. "Virtual fracking" is an art/science project - I am using chemicals used in hydraulic fracking to destroy photographs of sedimentary rock. What we are seeing is time-lapse macro-photography of slide film being chemically destroyed by a range of materials used in hydraulic fracking: hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and sodium hydroxide. Hydrochloric acid, for example, is used to dissolve minerals and create fissures in rock; sodium hydroxide, a highly caustic alkali substance, is used to adjust the pH levels of fracking fluid. What's amazing is that the hydrochloric acid "fracks" the film in exactly the same way that it fracks rock: it seeks the paths of least resistance in the film, which are the lighter areas of the image where less silver is deposited, and these areas naturally align with the fissures in the rock as depicted. The images are of sandstone and shale rock from various sites in Australia. The soundtrack has been developed from the sonification of Australian seismic data, plus contact-mic recordings.
