      • New Tools In Illustrator CC: Corner Control

        04:41

        from James George / Added

I've been using Illustrator for years, and have been wishing for a few more intuitive tools. While sometimes Illustrator has always felt a little "technical" and rigid to me, I've still always loved it. I actually learned Illustrator before I learned Photoshop. However, i always felt like Illustrator was really rigid as a drawing and illustration tool. Thankfully, Adobe has made moves to change Illustrator, adding features to make working with paths and shapes easier and more intuitive. After trying the new controls, it makes you wonder how you lived all these years without them. I've seen a lot of people online, saying that other programs have had these features for years, and it is about time that Adobe catches up. I am happy to say that Adobe is making the right move with these new capabilities. Now, you can control points and corners easily with just a click and a drag of your mouse.

Elisabeth Graffy Renewable energy options, led by rooftop solar, have recently transitioned from a luxury good available to few customers to increasingly cost-effective and mainstream sources of electric supply within the reach of many. Technological, policy and business innovations, together with favorable public attitudes toward renewable, decentralized energy generation, are contributing to fundamental transitions in energy markets and leading to widespread concerns and predictions of an imminent “death spiral” for utilities. Are these concerns valid? This talk presents a new conceptual framework that exposes current risks and opportunities while leading to practical strategies for utilities, consumers, policy-makers and entrepreneurs as they navigate critical decisions points leading from today's energy system to a more sustainable and resilient one.

                • Factory Meat and Designer Food: Soon at a Store Near You?

Brad Allenby Policy makers must grapple with the social implications and governance issues surrounding emerging technologies. The August 5, 2013 introduction of the first factory hamburger, made from stem cells in a production facility, followed by its ceremonial consumption, is one well-publicized example. While the cost of the original was over $300,000, estimates are that even using today’s technology one could produce factory meat for considerably less, perhaps under $500 per kilogram. While it is still unclear what technologies will actually be used, the implications of such a technological shift, ranging from the cultural and social challenges posed by designer food to economic impacts on the beef industry and its suppliers, are potentially profound. Thus, the time to begin thinking about how such a technology might diffuse, and how its impacts should be managed, is now, even given the high levels of uncertainty involved. In this sense, factory meat is not just important in itself, but as a case study of the many emerging technologies that raise similar considerations.
