This experiment was performed for a class in the NYU Performance Studies masters program entitled "The Performative Body." This piece in particular was created as a comment on Harry Harlow's experiments on monkeys during the 1950s. The piece depicts a little boy on a subway sitting next to his "wire monkey" mother, who does little more than provide him food. The piece raises questions such as: what is nourishment? As bystanders in a public area such as a subway, what are the stories we choose to ignore? In a subway train, the world outside the window appears to be flying past, yet in reality it is the stable ground and the viewer is unstable. Novel agents emerging for the treatment of lymphoma are offering some patients the opportunity of long-term disease control while avoiding aggressive and highly toxic chemotherapy therapies. For the time being, this means changing the goal of treatment from cure to control. Can patients live well with cancer still alive in their bodies? Is it better than high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell rescue? Dr. Owen O’Connor joins Patient Power from the 2014 International Workshop on Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (iwNHL) in Scottsdale, Arizona to share his perspective on this continuing trend in the research and treatment of lymphoma.
