              from Maitreya Levanchild Added 138 1 0

A Dutchman bought Governor's Island from the Lenape for an alleged two axe heads, a string of beads, and a few nails. In many Native traditions the exchange of trinkets is a symbol of transferred responsibility. But the Dutch, followed by the English, plundered and swindled, led by greed and a desire for private wealth. ‡ » ◊ « ‡ N o t A n I s l a n d is a roving dance piece / installation that re-invokes the mystical & secret. It is a re-opening of ancient holy places that were closed forcibly; a healing, of land and of ancestors, an un-branding of a whole line of people, a re-branding and a re-envisioning of the way we could live; a regeneration of sacred space, a looking ahead to a completely different future that’s possible. ‡ » ◊ « ‡ Music courtesy Ben Chasny / Six Organs of Admittance

For Bushwick open Studios artists JULIA COLAVITA and MATTHEW BRENNAN collaborate to transform borrowed space - a rented moving truck parked in the Brooklyn Fireproof alley - into a sculptural environment marked by multimedia assemblages of film, projection and sound. Inside, notions of cinematic are integrated with Colavita's network of sinuous lines, cut-outs, found x-rays and film, which serve as the basis for her mylar sculpture constructions. Multiple light sources, including film shot by Brennan, are projected through these suspended, translucent forms to fill the space with both static and moving shadows.
