Presented by: Dr Arkady Fedorov Rapid development of cryogenic equipment in the beginning of 20th century led to an unexpected discovery: electrical resistance of certain metals disappeared at very low temperatures. The phenomenon was called “superconductivity” and has remained of one the most exciting endeavours in physics. On one hand, scientists achieved remarkable progress on understanding of low-temperature superconductors. On the other hand, high temperature superconductivity discovered later, an effect more relevant to real life applications, remains elusive even after 30 years of its discovery. Superconductivity also gave birth to a notion of macroscopic quantum phenomena which had a great influence on understanding how quantum nature gets in touch with our classical world. Thanks to zero resistance, superconductive materials have been used in applications requiring low heat dissipation and high electrical currents. More recently with modern development of nanofabrication tools and quantum information theory, superconducting materials may find a new application: a new class of devices whose operation principles are based on quantum mechanics. In this presentation I will go over a history of discovery and summarize the main physical properties of superconductors. In the last part of the presentation I will focus on superconducting quantum devices.
