This video is a thank you to our friends Jack Soronen, Jack & Kallie Shaffer, Jeff Jurick, Dan Snell, John Hobday, Dakota Peak, and Ken Troy who worked on our farmhouse in WV. The house is 18 miles south of Berkeley Springs in Morgan County and was originally built around 1850. It had fallen into a bad state and needed a lot of work. Thanks to their efforts the old house has been saved and given a new lease on life. The music is one of my older fiddle tunes. It's in an old-timey Appalachian waltz style and was inspired by my dog Spike who often laid down in the living room and proceeded to snore. The musicians on the recording are Amy Leonard, violin; E. Shawn Qaissaunee, guitar; and Peter McCarthy, bass.

In the Blue Ridge Mountains, musicians often get together and jam but there has to be a decision on whether or not to "jam" those who jam can do so on either traditional old-time music or Bluegrass. This creates a division. In Floyd County in Southwester Virginia, they can do both int he same day. At The Floyd County Store, there are two jams: One for traditionalists and the other for Bluegrass.

This is a traditional old-time clawhammer banjo tune, taught to me by Dwight Diller in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. It's in the 'G-modal' tuning of g-D-G-C-D. Dwight taught me that these tunes, passed down from person to person, not being fixed or made static (killed, essentially) by writing them down in musical notation or tablature, are thus filtered and purified and distilled into something greater than any individual could create, and transmit "cultural messages." Dwight said that where the modal tunes are concerned, "speed kills," and the core messages of these mournful tunes have to do with death, and the lonely aspects of life in the remote places of the mountains. The banjo is a Cloverlick 'Knaves Run' model, made with great love and skill by Jeff Kramer in Wisconsin, and designed in consultation with Dwight to his specifications.

I'm playing clawhammer banjo along with Tommy Jarrell's fiddle, from his 1976 record Sail Away Ladies (County 756). Camera operator is Bella White, filming along Highway 1 driving from Strathmore to Calgary, Alberta.
