        • We take a look inside Dish Duel, the Culinary Tournament of Toronto

          05:44

          from View the Vibe Added

New culinary web site and event concepts pop up all the time. Some are good, some are not, and then there’s those that you go “oh how very cool is this!”. When I heard about Dish Duel, www.DishDuelTO.com, I was somewhat intrigued – especially given how often I eat out. Then I found out a great friend and food writer, Stella Yu, was one of the brains behind this child so I knew I needed to do a vlog to somehow alert everyone about how fun this culinary tournament is. So rather than try to describe what is they are doing, I have literally copy and pasted the concept as the conceptualizers are the ones who can describe it best : Every time you open a menu, you have one question: what's the best thing on the menu? You'll ask servers to tell you their opinion. You'll ask your friends before you go. You'll ask the nice couple beside you. Not that we don't endorse all of this asking, but what if the restaurant flat-out told you a specific dish was awesome? Dish Duel asks restaurants to present their best dish for an online winner-take-all tournament, where you and our esteemed bloggers decide the champ. First, you vote online. Second, two bloggers go taste and rate the dish. Third, we combine everything into a total score. Here's how we calculate it: 21/25 (blogger 1) + 20/25 (blogger 2) + 46% (the vote) = 87. In case you're curious, our bloggers rate on taste (/15), presentation (/5) and originality (/5) for the total score of 25. The voting for this first epic tournament begins Feb 18th, with each round of voting running a week at a time. As you and our team decide on the best dishes, we'll watch the cream rise to the top until a Dish Duel Champion is crowned on March 17th. So that’s it folks! Get out there and vote!! Help this fabulous concept organize a second Dish Duel soon! www.DishDuelTO.com

            05:44

            from View the Vibe Added

It’s that time of the year in Toronto – Winterlicious time. Last year, we tried a few different spots that were GREAT. Reds Bistro was my personal favourite. This year we selected three different Toronto hot spots: Luma, Malena and Volos. The first one we hite was Luma and I invited three of my favourite ladies: Stella Yu of www.FoodJunkieChronicles.com, Valerie Stachurski of www.ImCharmingYou.com and Sandy Trojanesk who has the cutest bachelor blog http://sassygirl-bachelorbabble.blogspot.com/. The executive chef of Luma is Jason Bangerter – one of my favourite chefs in the city. His love for what he does is so obviously reflected in the food he serves and on this particular night, he treated the four of us like queens. Rather than each choosing 1 appetizer, 1 main course, and 1 dessert, the Chef decided to give us a full tasting of the Winterlicious menu. WOW. It was truly a delicious and memorable meal… my favourites were the beetroot soup – which says a lot for a girl who HATES soup… and the flat iron steak with truffle au jus. I mean, honestly, need I say more? The ladies and I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful sampling to the point where the word “foodgasm” came up a few too many times… Watch us indulge in this 6-course meal starting with an over the top charcuterie platter. http://viewthevibe.com/index.php/restaurants/Canada/Ontario/Toronto-Central/Restaurant/Luma-73/listing.html www.OliverBonacini.com/Luma 350 King Street West, TIFF Bell Lightbox

            • Bannock Opens at The Bay & We Take a Sneak Peek!

Oliver & Bonacini has joined forces with The Hudson’s Bay Company to open Bannock, a new Canadian comfort food restaurant located on street level of The Bay. Bannock promises to deliver simple, humble food with a creative twist. The setting is unlike anything expected; sleek and modern while also very “woodsy” and cozy. Just prior to the opening, we were privy to a tasting of items offered on the Bannock menu. It is obvious that they have taken good old honest home cooking and added an innovative twist to it. Most impressive is the fact that everything is made from scratch; from the bread to pastries to desserts, and even their chocolates and gelato. On the lower level of The Bay – which is not included in this vlog – is Foodwares Market, a modern grab-and-go eatery created by Compass Group Canada for foodies who also like to shop. Next door, is O&B Artisan a chocolate making shop, which will call your name after a delicious meal and day of shopping. Foodwares Market is the first of 22 stores scheduled to open across Canada - certainly a fabulous culinary addition to a historical company such as The Bay. Bannock is located at 401 Bay Street at Queen Street. www.BannockRestaurant.com

                04:39

                from View the Vibe Added

The best time of year to experience deliciously renowned restaurants in Toronto is during Winterlicious and Summerlicious. Over 150 restaurants feature their menu at extremely affordable prices – ranging from $15 to $45, depending on the restaurant. If you haven’t tried Auberge du Pommier than you should! It is of course one of our city’s best restaurants, however if you’re on a budget, make sure you get there during this Toronto foodie event. I took Kate, my summer intern (there’s gotta be SOME perks to being an intern…) who is a VERY picky eater. In this case though her palette was pleasantly surprised and we both thoroughly enjoyed a $25 lunch that felt more like it should have been $50!! Surprisingly – even to me – this was my first time dining at Auberge du Pommier and now I understand what all the fuss is about. I definitely want to experience this amazing French fine dining restaurant again soon! Auberge du Pommier is located at 4150 Yonge Street www.oliverbonacini.com/Auberge-du-Pommier.aspx
