    • Good Pretender - A Short Film About Family & Robots

After trying to convince some local bullies that her father is a robot, eleven year old Ally is dared to shoot him with a spear gun to prove it. Genre : Australian Social Drama. Directed By Maziar Lahooti. Produced By Daniel Parry. Written by Mike Hoath & Maziar Lahooti. Cast : Olivia DeJonge, Wayne Davies, Vito DeFrancesco, Nick Coombe, Taylor Young. Budget : $51,000 AU Format : S16MM with a 1920x1080 HD transfer and final master which I downrezzed to 1280x720 so I could upload it. It was shot on the same thirty year old Aaton most my films are shot on. Skill and courtesy of the masterful Cinematographer, Alex McPhee. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of my other films "The Luger Story" won me $45,000 of the production budget for this film in an American Film Festival. Well, it got us into the next round. Then we had to write the script. Mike already had a basic draft which we worked on with some really great American talent. Like with my earlier short film "Crossroad" which was made as part of the same competition in 2008 - (Also on my vimeo site) - they flew me over twice. This time they held the event in L.A, and it was awesome. We won $15,000 US, so naturally, we hired a convertible and drove to Vegas. The only thing I really remember from Vegas, is Peggy's diner, on the way back, those amazing burgers, and the real, American homely attitude. Real Americans. Great people. Great food! But Vegas being fun and all, I really do have to say, one of the highlights of making this film was being shown L.A by people like Dan Ireland and Jeff Dowd. Nothing quite like watching The Dude himself stage a protest at a car park entrance at a whim cause the security wouldn't let us park for free. A great experience from beginning to end, the whole thing. Below are the films humble festival qualifications as of yet. Will update as more come in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2012 - Yourfilmfestival (Ridley Scott & Michael Fassbender youtube festival) - Top 50 Semifinalist 2012 - Adelaide SHORTS Film Festival. 2012 - NOMINATION for Best Young Actor at the AACTA (Formerly A.F.I) Awards 2012 - Flickerfest International Short Film festival (Academy Accredited) 2011 - Seattle International Film Festival - (Academy Accredited) 2011 - Palm Springs International Shortsfest - (Academy Accredited) 2011 - Doorpost Film Project - L.A - WINNER - $15,000 US – Third Prize - WINNER - Best Music Score – Toby Chu - WINNER - Best outstanding breakthrough performance – Olivia DeJonge. 2011- Western Australian Screen awards - Nomination For Best Film - WINNER - Best actor (Wayne Davies) - WINNER - Best actress (Olivia DeJonge) - Nomination For Best Production Design. - WINNER - Best screenplay (Maziar Lahooti & Mike Hoath)

This is what happens when you're good at acting. When I first met Olivia she had virtually zero dramatic acting experience, and she honestly didn't need it. Casting her as my lead in my short film "Good Pretender" was a no brainer. She's one of the most intelligent young girls I've ever met but more importantly, she is by far one of the most talented actors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She has an incredibly infectious charisma and she's the kind of talent that makes everyone else raise their game. After working with her on Good Pretender, I had such a great time I immediately began writing a feature length film for the same leading cast. With any luck, I'll still be able to afford her by the time it gets up! Watch out for this one. Olivia is not someone anyone is likely to forget. Below are the awards she has won so far. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good Pretender - Short film - Ally (Lead) 2011 - Doorpost International Film Festival -(L.A) -WINNER - Outstanding breakthrough performance. (A category judged by Titanic and Unforgiven's Francis Fisher) 2011 - Western Australian Screen Awards. -WINNER - Best actress
