For more information on why I study dust, check out this companion video: https://vimeo.com/49981447 Atmospheric dust transport is the movement of soil particles by the wind locally, regionally, and globally. The movement of dust in the air has many results, including deterioration of air quality, nutrient transport, increasing snowmelt rates, seeding of coral reefs, and impacting regional and global climate. Dust transport in the eastern Great Basin of Utah is caused by strong southerly winds that form prior to storms in the springtime. These winds, called Hatu winds (Utah spelled backward), pick up dust from dry lake beds, also known as playas, as well as disturbed areas, such as wildfire scars and fallow agricultural fields. As the dust is transported to the populated regions of Utah it caused elevated levels of particulate matter, and has caused over 18 exceedances of air quality standards for PM10 and PM2.5 over the past 13 years. When the dust falls on the spring snowpack, it makes the snow dirty, causing the snow to melt earlier and decreasing runoff. As the storm systems approach, the rain will act to wash the dust out of the air, sometimes leading to it raining mud. This deposits foreign soil to the valleys and mountains, as well as trace metals such as cadmium and mercury. For more information about me, my research, or dust, please check out my website: http://hahnenberger.weebly.com or follow me on twitter: http://twitter.com/Maura_Science
