              The first place winner is Sarah Strauss, LEED AP, who was a Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Ms. Strauss’ entry, “Tropical Interiors Studio”, modeled experiential learning, blending classroom and studio techniques with immersion into place. The project developed students’ design skills while also exposing them to cultural aspects of design and thoughtfully integrating sustainability issues specific and appropriate to the unique project site.

                    Architecture Spring 2015 Lecture Series - January 22, 2015 at Slocum Hall. Guillermo Banchini teaches design studios at Pratt and at the National University of Rosario, Argentina. His goals can be described as an attempt to deal with architectural organizations capable of acquiring a rather unseen degree of material performance. He also intends to propose new proto instrumental and highly sensitive material orders akin to the complexity and sophistication of contemporary life. Banchini is a registered architect in Argentina. He had a practice with Marcelo Spina in Rosario from 1995 until 2001. He holds a master’s degree from Sci-Arc in Los Angeles worked at PATTERNS until 2004 when he returned to Argentina. In 2004, he established BAarqs in Rosario, Argentina and has produced nearly 50 projects that range from academic research to private commissions, as well as national and international competitions. Projects include the Soho-Lounge Restaurant and the winning proposal for Sci-Arc extension, the monocoque house for the Venice and Beijing Biennale in 2004, third prize for the “New tax national office branch Rosario,” and selection for BIAU 2014 exhibition. He has been a guest lecturer at Escuela de arquitectura de Catalunya, Universidad de Palermo [BAP 2014, Buenos Aires], Universidad de Arquitectura de Puerto Rico [XIII Bienal de Arquitectura y Arquitectura Paisajista de Puerto Rico, 2013], Sigradi and participated in the Digital and Graphic symposium [ Argentina, 2003], University of Sydney [Lecture series, 2002, Australia]. Master of Architecture, MR+D 2002; National University of Rosario, Argentina – School of architecture, planning and design - Architect, 1994. BAarqs work ranges in scale, programs and intensity. As a collective body it shares a growing interest in exploring emerging conditions of material organizations associated to notions of volume and surface. Our practice is situated in the culture of the productive within our discipline. We believe in the self-evidence of any creative discipline. While external stimulus from other fields continuously reverberates, inspires and influences our practice, our work is fundamentally concerned with the Architectural medium, that what is particularly intrinsic and inherently unique about what we do. Guillermo Banchini organized this lecture as a result of a new over imposed sequence among our production for the last 10 years. BAarqs has been developing design knowledge as a result of combining the designing and building of projects with an active participation in architectural pedagogy In 2004 by following a continued interest in geometry, digital fabrication, material effect, and craft work and attainable design solutions this communal knowledge led to the introduction of a knowledge platforms to the studio. The objective of the platform is to capitalize knowledge from within the discipline of architecture in order to propel design thinking and innovation.
