Henk and Victoria de Heus-Zomer own a family business in animal food that exports its products worldwide. They work hard, earn money and become interested in contemporary art. From that moment, now 25 years ago, they have enjoyed accumulating what is today a celebrated collection. Initially the emphasis is on Dutch painting. As the years pass, sculpture is also included. They look over the borders. They meet Fang Lijun, a young Chinese artist who is working temporarily in Amsterdam. Fang Lijun visits Henk and Victoria in Barneveld. He invites them in return to visit his home. In Beijing. It is 1998. Henk and Victoria visit the Chinese capital and meet many artists. They buy work and decide to monitor their developments. Regularly they visit their artist friends. Some have now achieved a star status. Their collection of Chinese art grows and so does their circle of friends. In September 2013, Henk and Victoria again go to Beijing together. They visit leading galleries and more than 20 studio’s. This video does report their visit to a.o. Huang Rui, Ai Weiwei, Zhang Dali, Hai Bo, Zhang Xiaogang, Lin Tianmiao, Wang Guangle, Liu Wei. The artists speak about their work in relationship to China’s (recent) past. This video was made on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Focus Beijing’, which shows a selection from the collection of contemporary Chinese art belonging to Henk and Victoria De Heus-Zomer. It can be seen in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen until 21 September 2014.

In episode 9 of Boijmans TV 2013, Mandy puts her foot down and Arie rushes to Johan van Oord: sprinkles or coffee beans? But nothing is ever as simple as that. And although the brown, or rather ‘Venetian red’ shapes on the walls of the espresso bar refer to nothing in the visible reality, Van Oord doesn’t want to be called an abstract artist. His work can best be compared with that of a composer or musician, where a limited number of elements are each time arranged with different colours and a new rhythm. The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama works with grids and dots, but she does that with a different intention and also with a totally different result. Bregje leads a group of Lolitas to Kusama’s mirror installation ‘Phalli’s Field’. There the young ladies turn out to be less sweet and childish than their clothing would suggest. Bregje is unable to tell them anything new about Kusama, her obsessive-compulsive neurosis, existential fear and sexual frustrations. And did you miss the bouncer by the museum’s door? That’s possible, for in this episode he goes inside with a lost Lolita.

‘There’s a giant at my counter,’ announces Mandy to security, when a giant of a latecomer reports for Bregje’s tour. Bregje was just about to discuss the painting ‘The new generation’ by Jan Toorop with her group of young fathers with babies in carriers. In this painting, Toorop showed time rushing by, but, according to Bregje, he also wanted to express the vulnerability of parenthood. In the meantime, Marco is taken by his adolescent son Jordi to see the installation of Tanja Smeets - it’s Jordi’s favourite work. This environment, made from thousands of plastic concrete butterflies has given him the courage to start a conversation with his father about personal growth. For Tanja Smeets, growth can go in all directions; her work is open and searches for a route past fixed points in the environment. At the ticket desk things are getting out of hand: the flyers Mandy uses to get people to vote for her are threatening to overrun the whole counter and her as well! The blood-curdling finale shows the excesses of proliferation caused by Tanja Smeets: run for your life!

The fourth episode of Boijmans TV 2013 is called ‘I Spy with my Little Eye.’ And naturally everybody responds to this with: ‘So what do you see then?’ Mandy looks out from behind her desk on the enormous Easter egg by Jeff Koons and suddenly sees the Easter Hare - or is it a rabbit? Now she sees him - now she doesn’’t. She follows the animal and gets lost on the stairs of a building that looks like the museum, but isn’t. It turns out to be a place of sickness and suffering: the Rotterdam Eye Hospital. Kees Sol, member of the board of the Eye Hospital, however, sees it differently. He explains to Arie - who, because of a broken lamp, initially doesn’t see who’s sitting in the ‘Hole of Cattelan’ - that there is so much art to be seen in the Eye Hospital in order to dispel the fear of the patients and to help the healing process. While Mandy wanders through the Eye Hospital with ‘eyes wide shut’, the opticians who Bregje entertains move through the museum with their eyes closed, and finally stand in front of ‘The Blind Man’ by the Belgian painter Gustave Van de Woestijne. Bregje wants to get some insight from the specialists: what does the world actually look like for somebody who is blind? Does a blind person perhaps see other things? Things that a sighted person doesn’t see?
