1. Perseid Meteor Shower Failure

    from ph dee Added 163K 507 38

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park was rated highly among best places to watch the meteor shower and I'll somewhat agree, however, it was not a great place to photograph it. To say that the perpetual stream of airplanes didn't ruin my night is an understatement. Oh well. I might try to go and batch process these to try to make the meteors that did show up in frame pop more but I probably won't because everytime I see this I am reminded of my disappointing night.

        • 2013 Perseids Meteor Shower: Fireball and Persistent Train

          from Michael Chung Added 304K 493 24

I got really lucky and captured what I believe to be a meteor explosion with a resulting, expanding shock wave or debris ring. UPDATE: After being fortunate to have Universe Today cross post my vid, I learned more about the phenomena recorded here. While this does show a meteor breaking apart, the resulting, expanding ring is called a "persistent train" and is NOT a debris ring. Rather, it is glowing gas - charged gas that has been heated by compression caused by the meteor and giving off electrons (similar to how a neon sign works). It happens fairly often but it isn't so regularly documented. http://www.universetoday.com/104149/incredible-footage-shows-a-perseid-meteor-exploding/ Because I shoot at much higher resolution than 720p, I was able to provide (2) sequences in this video: (1) is with the full frame of each capture scaled/reduced and then cropped down to 1280x720, and (2) the other is with the full frame kept at resolution with just the region around the explosion cropped to 1280x720. I included each sequence twice - once at 24fps and the other at around 12fps. Stats for this timelapse sequence: Camera: Canon 7D Lens: Tokina 11mm-16mm/2.8 Exposure: 20sec Iso: 800 Aperture: 2.8 Focal Length: 11mm Interval: 22sec Video Frame Rate: 24fps

            • 2015-08-13 Perseid meteor shower and afternoon clouds

              from Aaron Priest Added 2,418 18 11

This is a timelapse I took of the Perseid meteor shower, sunrise, and afternoon clouds in my back yard the morning of August 13, 2015. I missed most of the night because I had to wait until 12:50 AM for the sky to clear after thunderstorms, and dawn was less than three hours later. We did have some amazing green air glow though! The Andromeda galaxy can be seen to the right of the Milky Way as Pleiades and Capella can be seen rising from the tree tops, facing roughly 58° north east on the compass dial. I took 1,937 photos for almost thirteen and a half hours until 2:17 PM when the battery in my Nexus 7 tablet running qDslrDashboard died. I had a dew heater on the lens through the night and sunrise, set to 5° above ambient temperature, but even that wasn’t enough to completely prevent dew on the lens at sunrise. I should have dialed it up more. Taken with a Nikon D810, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, DewNot heat strip, DewBuster Controller, Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod & BH-55 ballhead, and qDslrDashboard running on a Nexus 7 (2013 model) for shutter, ISO, and aperture ramping. The night exposures were 14mm, f/2.8, ISO 5000, 20 seconds ramped to f/13, ISO 64, 1/2500 for some of the day shots. Edited with Lightroom / LRTimelapse and rendered in 7.3K ProRes 442HQ with Premiere Pro from 16-bit TIFFs. Music is a segment of Getting Closer from Hunting the Light by Peter Nanasi. Used with permission. Visit his website and purchase his music here: http://www.peternanasi.com The whole album is great!

                      from Randy Hoffmann Added 2,860 44 8

This short film is my first attempt at celestial / Milky Way photography and consists of four time-lapse sequences, two shot per night. Sky conditions were favourable with no moon and minimal turbulence. The only drawback was the orange glow near the horizon in the direction of the Caldera caused by the Calima phenomenon. Weather conditions were tolerable with light winds and cool temperatures. The view of the Milky Way was breathtaking. The growing intensity of the Perseid Meteor Shower as seen especially in the fourth sequence near morning twilight was certainly a treat. Shooting these celestial timelapses took a lot of planning and patience. The Island of La Palma is beautiful in all aspects. It's a great place to hike and perfect for viewing and photographing the heavens.
