Nicole and I climbed Eldorado peak in the North Cascades over the weekend corresponding to the peak Persis meteor shower in August 2012. Our campsite on the Eldorado glacier allowed superb views of the nearby climb and clear views to the NE for prime viewing of the meteors. One surprise was the presence of the aurora. We were asleep at the time but I assume it was not visible to the naked eye - perhaps the coloring of the sky would have been, but the tell tale curtain shapes were likely too subtle to see without the help of long exposure. Exposures were 30 seconds at f/2.8 at ISO 3200. I intended to use f/2.8 to combat flicker associated with the apertere stopping down to slightly different sizes, but the ISO 3200 was forced upon me by the darkness of the sky that night - a boon for meteor viewing, but difficult for images of the stars without allowing them to trail. Perhaps an f/1.4 lens is in order.....
