This is my submission to the 2015 VAST conference at Temple University. Abstract: Though graffiti has been around for most of human history, its contemporary form began in Philadelphia in 1967 with a writer who went by the name 'Cornbread.' It has evolved since then into a complex subculture full of hierarchies, traditions, and rules. Graffiti is everywhere we look; it has become its own medium and its classification is continually debated as vandalism or art. That primitive sentiment, however, still remains of leaving one's imprint on a space, especially one that is off-limits. Much of society processes graffiti as something that is negative because of the insistence that property belongs to a single party, which consequently is the only party with the right to change or alter that property in any way. Graffiti writers eschew this idea of property, and instead claim the space that they occupy, regardless of who may technically ‘own’ that space or not. They redefine the urban landscape into a linguistic one. This ethnography began in 2012 as a simple class project for Bapa (Professor Jhala), and went on to completely take over my life for three years. I have created a space where six people (four graffiti writers, a police officer, and an artist/art teacher) debate and discuss Philadelphia graffiti through a series of ten themed chapters. They shed light on the practice of graffiti, and make a space for more to understand this social phenomenon. Details: Film/photography accomplished with a Nikon d90, an iPhone 4s and 5c, and an old Blackberry. Edited in iMovie. Sound edited in Logic Pro by Quinn Bartlett. Usiloquy's new work 'Ragas and Airs' is based on intersections between the music and folklore of Indian and Celtic communities, expanding upon the historic connections between South Asian and Celtic heritage. Encompassing traditional to neo-Celtic music, 'Ragas and Airs' invites audience on a journey that begins with a romantic ballad to the colonial remnants of the East India company's forage into South Asia to its present day, global avatar. Tying one of the oldest immigrant communities in the Americas with one of the newest, this work is a platform exploring the intersection of diverse genres and cultures. The Irish Memorial, Philadelphia July 2014.
