NIGHTWALK by Scott Barley / Devon, UK / 2013 / 6 min. Several figures move through the darkness on a cliff-edge. An inaudible conversation near the brow of the cliff may be the cause for the group to disband. The rest of the film follows the solitary journey of the youngest member of the group, until she rests; where land meets the sea. Inspired by the philosophy of Remodernist Film. The human body, its presence and absence, has been a constant subject for exploration since the beginnings of Cinema. The Lumiere brothers showed us the many nameless bodies exiting the field of the camera in their first known film. Since then, the human body has been a subject for both cinematic transcendence and transgression, both as a symbol of a tangible space for cinematic ontology and as one whose absence defines 'pure' cinema. This exploration, which went through many great film artists like Hans Richter, Jean Epstein, Germaine Dulac, Robert Bresson, Stan Brakhage, Hollis Frampton, Philippe Garrel, Tsai Ming-Liang, Philippe Grandrieux, Bertrand Bonello and so on, has often used the human body as a medium to arrive at enormous ontological conclusions. Through the use of Cinema's two key instruments, the Camera and Editing, this film tries to converge the two schools of thought, those of the body's presence and absence, in trying to arrive at something genuinely immaterial and transcendental; human activities on a street are distorted to give abstract images and sequences. The film is silent to invite the audience's participation in the process of determining/ undermining the film's 'reality'. You can either absorb the atmospheric sound around you, or listen to your favorite music while you watch it; the idea is to experience the film in its multiplicity i.e. each person watching it must have a unique impression about the film and I trust the audience's choice of the sound to determine the same. I also request everyone to watch the film on a full screen, and at one go. Please download the video, or let it buffer completely on a full-screen setting. Cheers!
