1. Vines & Veins: Meda101 Cine Roman Project

The starting point for my cine roman project is a tweet from William Gibson’s Twitter feed: “Every single ocean now has a massive swirling plastic garbage patch”. This stood out to me as it juxtaposed with the otherwise media & technology based tweets. It made me think about the culture/nature binary, and how developed nations have generally moved away from nature despite being intrinsically part of it. I created a mind map and sketched out a story board which was focused on global warming and its causes. After being advised to go about it more conceptually, I made a new mind map, this time focused on natural patterns found throughout the universe and how these patterns are also found within ourselves. I started thinking of patterns I could photograph and was stuck on the fact that ‘vines & veins’ even use the same letters. From here I decided to photograph a human slowly unraveling themselves from vines, adorning themselves with a suit and observing the man – made squarish blocks which is the Redgum Ridge Development in Figtree. I listened to some meda101 sound projects and used: Meghan Hardie’s (2015), ‘Conflicting Elements’ and Kayla Forsyth’s (2015), ‘Authority’ as they made use of natural and man-made sounds. I also used audacity to cut and move around different sounds to match the images and to compress the tracks together.

Insomnia is a plague that infects people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. To those on the outside, it doesn't appear to amount to much, provoking statements like, "just take a nap" and "why don't you go to bed earlier?" Putting it plainly, it's just not that simple. To the insomniac, sleep just isn't a thing. Hours melt together into one huge amalgamated mass of time, stretching endlessly into a lonely path for one to follow. The trek on this trail of time opens the eyes of the affected to just how silent most nights are, how little is actually going on. Sitting awake in a chair or laying down in a bed, listening to the simple lack of concious life in the surrounding world; it's humbling. One realizes how small they really are, how great sleep really is. To be able to turn off, extract yourself from everything. To just take a break from the barrage of stimuli, the sensory overload of daily life. Until sleep is out of reach, it's hard to realize how important, how crucial it really is.

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
