Yoko Ono embraced and utilized the full participation of her audience within her installations. I wanted to take influences and spices from this style of performance art and employ viewers of my project to be active participants within the work. At a certain moment, the project and subject being myself, literally became their art piece that was solely based off of improvisation, spontaneity and personalized taste. I think that my hair is a very unique part of myself that helps describe my persona. It’s an explanation of my bi-coastal personality that has taken form. My wild and uncontrolled curls signify my side of creativity and is greatly exposed on the topside of my head, while the sides of my head remain short, controlled and composed in a more east coast demeanor.

This installation was a Project for my Senior Seminar Art class, I wanted to tackle the issues of racism within a post-modern society. A society that is well passed that presence of active racism, but now lives and breeds within the passive presence of racism within everyday life. Within this piece I really wanted to tackle and confront the social constructs that are prevalent at this time for black people within the societies of private institutions and the work force. For me it’s an issue that is present everyday of my life, and I was determined to do a piece on it to not only express myself, but provide something thought provoking, confrontational and controversial for the viewers. Overall I wanted to construct a reaction from my audiences that varies for each person. I want this piece to really be impactful for them, as much as it was for myself, if not more.

Pitzer College Acting President Thomas Poon takes the ALS ice bucket challenge – with a sustainable Pitzer twist. In deference to California’s threatened environment during the on-going historic severe drought, he takes a modest 8-ounce ice-water shower in a drought tolerant garden and invites his fellow presidents of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California to also take the challenge. Poon was joined by students Molly Hickey ’17 and Chance Kawar ’17 and made a donation to the ALS Association.
