I've updated the video to omit the foreground landscape in an effort to account for an error in perspective. Unfortunately, due to my error, websites are widely reporting that Jupiter would fill the entire night sky, but it wouldn't. What's depicted here is a much narrower perspective than the previously mentioned 62 degrees, something that I imagine could be calculated by people much brighter than I. I imagine this view is closer to what you'd see through some very weak binoculars, but that's just a guess. For a somewhat technical explanation of what was wrong with the original version of this video, and what that realization can teach us about skepticism, please read the following: http://bradblogspeed.com/im-bad-at-math ORIGINAL POST Here's an animation I did to make you feel small, and also convey the deep awe I feel at the feet of the Universe. While watching the video of the lunar eclipse I posted the other day I was looking at the curvature of the earth's shadow on the moon. It made me think about how large the earth might look if an exact copy of it was up there instead of the moon. Soon curiosity got the better of me, and I was animating! So the basic idea is, each planet you see is the size it would appear in the sky if it shared an orbit with the moon, 380,000 kms from earth. I created this video in After Effects, and because of certain technical considerations had to keep the field of view at 62 degrees. That means the foreground element is not precisely to scale. I realized this after the fact and may update the video at some point in the future. All planets are to correct scale with one another in any case. Please watch full screen in HD if possible. Oh! Cerro Paranal is truly an astronomers paradise with its stunningly dark, steady and transparent sky. Located in the barren Atacama Desert of Chile it is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. Operated by the European Southern Observatory (www.eso.org) the Very Large Telescope (VLT) is located on Paranal, composed of four 8 m telescopes which can combine their light to make a giant telescope by interferometry. Four smaller auxiliary telescopes, each 1.8 m in aperture, are important elements of the VLT interferometer. Walking on the desert near Paranal between the scattered stones and boulders on the pale red dust feels like being on Mars but under the Earth sky. It is an amazing experience to be under an ideal night sky, a pure natural beauty unspoiled by urban lights. On Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert you look all around the horizon and there is no prominent sign of city lights, neither direct lights or light domes. There are not many locations left on this planet where you can still experience a dark sky like this. I have been to similar dark skies in other continents from the heart of Sahara in Algeria to Himalayas or islands in the Pacific. But what makes Atacama beat others is being dry and clear for so many nights per year. Paranal was selected for cutting edge astronomical observations also because of the sky transparency and steady atmospheric condition which let astronomers peer in to tiny details in the deep cosmos using giant telescopes. This footage is made during an imaging expedition to Paranal assigned by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).             Music : Suns https://www.facebook.com/sunsofficial and https://twitter.com/wearesuns Another Sci Fi music video I animated : https://vimeo.com/80788696 In the Summer of 2013 Suns approached me with the idea of developing a music video for their track 'Bells' and upon listening to the track -which I loved- I immediately had thoughts of an astronaut travelling alone through space. With this initial image in mind I began experimenting with various visual effects using After Effects. I used two AE plugins: Plexus 2.0 and Trapcode Form, I started to develop my ideas which involved generating the thin line aesthetic and dots that I was after. The majority of the 3D models used in the video are based on real objects from Space; the Hubble Space Telescope, Progress and Voyager 1. The planets and moons in the video are generated using NASA imagery, and helped to create a formal aspect to an otherwise abstract piece. Once I'd settled on the visual look for the piece, I began to think about how the structure will be developed in relation to the journey of the astronaut and the emotion of the track.

                  Dedicated to my Granddad - Ronald John Bloomfield 1926 - 2013. A keen photographer and 8mm film enthusiast. Photographed over the course of three weeks in Johannisholm, Sweden. Dec 2012 - Jan 2013 With the sun setting around 3-4 pm each evening, this gave alot of opportunities to shoot at night.                     Did you see the smiley face in the sky, formed by a rare alignment of heavenly bodies on the 1st of December 2008? Right on schedule on Monday evening, Venus, Jupiter and a three-day-old crescent moon have appeared as a smiley face above the western horizon. While they appeared to be close together, in reality they weren't. The crescent moon is 403,000km away while Venus is 149.5 million km away and Jupiter 870 million km. It will be another five years before it appears again, but the next time the three will be as close and visible as this week will be Nov 18, 2052. Hope you guys saw it, as it was truly beautiful. ..................... First shot was taken with my small photographic digital camera, which only has a 3x zoom. By the time I got the HV20 out, it was dark. There was a light cloud passing as I was taping and it made the planets (eyes of the face) wink. It truly was magnificent when the sky was a deep blue with the 'Smiley Face' beaming down upon us. That's when I ran to get my camera and tripod, but by the time I got everything ready it already started to get dark... Oh man, now I have to wait until 2052 before I get another shot at it. So please wait, I promise to get a better shot then ;-)
