Some common and some uncommon places to see in Oakland. The quiet emptiness at sunrise. Tai Chi every morning. Farmer's Market on the weekend. A game of chess. Groceries in Chinatown. Comfort food at the truck. And basketball at the park. 1st Place Winner of the Oakland Convention and Visitors Bureau's "2010 I Love Oakland! 30' x 10' video installation Official Selection of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Commissioned by the Port of Oakland for the Oakland International Airport. Created in collaboration with the Cause Collective - Bayeté Ross Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, Jessica Ingram, Jorge Sanchez and Ryan Alexiev www.causecollective.com Along the Way is a 14 minute video mosaic that includes over 1,500 videos taken by the artists featuring the people and places of Oakland, California and the surrounding Bay Area. Upon arriving in Oakland, viewers are reminded that community is made up of a myriad of peoples. Individuals of different ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds are depicted without being categorized. The thread is their humanity which is evoked in video portraits and the culminating video mosaic. At its core, Along the Way is about the journeys diverse communities bestow upon its people. This is captured in extraordinary video portraits of everyday people. At times intensity, seriousness, humor or even lightness is evoked through a stare, grin or grimace. Faces and places merge and commingle creating a vocabulary that evokes mood while underscoring place and movement with the unifying thread being the humanity of what we all encounter “Along The Way”.

This was a very special day and time for me and my immediate family. We were headed to the Port of Oakland this late afternoon to visit my cousin, Schubert Graciano. He is actually an engineer on a shipping vessel and he's also a seaman. He is the Chief Engineer in their ship for many years. So in this video, it shows you our road trip to the Portland of Oakland, CA mostly along I-880 northbound. We arrived to the port around sunset. There were lots of those cargo containers! We had to meet him at Berth 55. Then when we arrived to the Nanjin Shipping/Berth 55, we found Schubert and Jim walking towards us. Once we picked both of them up, we headed to Emeryville, CA where we would stop buy Best Buy and then eat dinner. We had a nice view while along I-880. We saw the late sunset sky with the San Francisco Bay to the left. Heavy traffic was encountered as we exited. Then we drove towards Best Buy and going through Emeryville and passed by the Bay Street. It was sort of like a European feel. After a good stop at Best Buy and after my cousin's happy shopping, we headed to the Bay Street. By the way, we had to ask for some directions how to get back to the port later. Then we ate at P.F. Chang's China Bistro along the Bay Street. They had awesome food, and my favorite was the lemon chicken and the honey walnut shrimp. It was nearing 9 p.m. and my cousin Schubert and Jim had to quickly go back to the port. So we left Bay Street and headed towards the port. However, we sort of got turned around and got lost while along the way back but luckily we found the way back to the port. This was a fun evening here at Emeryville/Oakland, CA with our long lost cousin, Schubert G.!
